The second of a series of. examinations under the auspices of the Institute of Optometrists of New Zealand is at present being conducted in Wellington. There are twent}* candidates from all parts of the Dominion. The examinations are divided into two main divisions, practical optics and advanced sight-testing, and a second division qf sight-testing and matters relating thereto. The written papers have been set by a well-known Zsew South Wales optician, Mr Kctt, and the executive of the Institute, assisted by Mr Batstone, of Christchurch, is examining candidates iu the practical divisions. The Institute hopes that the Government measure relating to the practice of optometry in the Dominion, held over from the session just ended, will be' adopted during the next session.
Among the most highly-prized animals in zoological collections are giraffes, and comparatively few zoos possess specimens, for they arc extremely difficult to procure and costly to purchase. There is a strong probability, however, that the Auckland Zoo will soon number among its attractions one, if not a pair, of these creatures, a3 word has been received from the curator (Mr T. L. Griffin), who is now in Pretoria, that it is possible he may be able to obtain a giraffe, or a pair of giraffes, on favourable terms. A cable message has been sent to him in reply, authorising him to purchase, preferably a pair.
