MILK SUPPLY.

♦— CITY COUNCIL INVESTIGATIONS.

GRADING RECOMMENDED. | 1 A snecial coinmitte® was set. nv b >" tho City Council eomo time ogo to investigate and report cm tho mtu, supply question. ~ , , At the meeting of tlie Council last night tho committee presented t e following report: — The committee, after giving the subject of tho city's milk supply full consideration at several meetings and hearinc the evidence of experts in all matters relative to tho subject, is of opinion that all milk supplied shoul be graded A, B, and C, and that the establishment of a laboratory _is essential, where monthly samples or all nsl '*j should be tested bacteriologically ;uid nutritively. The suggested grades micht l>o specified somewhat as follows: Grade A.—A very high quality milk in sealed bottles, cooled to degrees F., from tested herds and certified sources of supply. Grade B.—Middle-grade article, but a thoroughly good one. Grade C. —An article which could be sold only for manufacturing purposes. ■' The suggestion regarding a laboratory is that the Council might cooperate with the Hospital _ Board, which has expressed its willingness, provided the Council is prepared _ to supply certain requisite additional equipment and staff. On t-lie adyice of Air R. 33. Alexander, of Lincoln College, estraets from the English Act, with comments taken from the Journal of the Ministry _of Agriculture, England, were considered. These could be U9ed as a "basis for the formulation of local regulations. The City Solicitor advises that existing legislation, while providing for inspection of sources of "supply by. officers of the Public Health «nd Agriculture Departments, does not give the City Council atttlioritv to inspect or control dairies or dairy herds outside the city area nor ie such authority likely to bo made Available without the passing of additional legislation. These legislative powers for the Council should' be obtained. At one of the conferences lield between the committee and certain experts ifc was approved that those present might with advantage be constituted «, standing advisory committee in the matter of the control of the city's milk supply. Tlje report waa signed by tho chairman of the committee (Cr. Clyde Carr) and was adopted by the Council.
