TIMARU. Social and Personal. Miss Monica Hamilton arrived from Christchurch yesterday on a visit to Mrs F. J. Le Crcn (Seaview terrade). Mr and Mrs Arthur Elworthy and MiBS Betty Elworthy (Holme Station), and Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy (Craigmore), have returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Simon MacKenzie, Miss Jessie MacKenzie (Raincliffj, and Mr and Mrs Alister MacKenzie (EdgeclifE) returned- to Timaru on Sunday.

Mr and Mrs Edgar Jones, the Misses Jones, and Mr Griffith Jones motored back from Christchurch on Sunday.

Mr and Mrs E. J. Le Crcn and Mis 3 Ethel Le Crcn (Maori Hill) have returned from Christchurch.

Miss Marion Hay (Sefton street) returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs E. F. Hill (Mere Mere street) and Mrs V. Helmorc (Orielton) motored back from Christchurch yesterday.

Mr" and Mrs C. G. Curtis ("Wai-iti road) intend leaving Timaru shortly to take up their residence in Christchurch, -where Mr Curtis succeeds the late Mr J. A. Boswell in the management of the Christchurch branch of the Westport Coal Co., Ltd. The Weather. More settled -weather condition appear to be falling to the lot of Timaru at the present time, yesterday adding yet another to tho number of fino, warm, and comparatively windless days which have recently been experienced. Sea bathing ia now in full swing, and the bathing facilities at Caroline Bay are being heavily taxed. Especially was this so on Saturday, which was a particularly hot day, when the takings at the sheds amounted to £3O. High Schools Board. The monthly meeting of the Timaru High Schools Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr L.J. McGregor (chairman), Mrs B. H. Low, Messrs H. H. Fraser, W. D. Revell, T. Lyon, B. Orwin, J. Maze Commander G. Dennistoun, and Dr. L. S. Talbot.

The Finance Committee reported that the proposed alterations to the general regulations affecting secondary schools had been gone into carefully, and it had been decided unanimously that they be approved. The proposed new regulations in regard to part-time teachers had also been carefully considered, and it was decided that they be approved, with the exception that the schedule of payments was not sufficiently generous to girls' schools. The Director of Education, replying to the Board's application for subsidies amounting to £l6O, stated that the amount had been approved. The subsidies asked for were: jßooka £SO, tenniscourts £SO, ground improvements £6O. The principal of the girls' school wrote pointing out that a piece of land in front of the hostel was to be offered by public auction, and suggested that the Board should consider purchasing the property, as it would prove valuable for a preparatory school, and -would also provide an annexe to the present hostel in years to come. The Board discussed the matter in committee.

The rector (Mr W. Thomas) reported that the annual examinations were to commence to-morrow, and would continue till December 12th as the most suitable date for "Speech Night.'f It was hoped to have the new opeh-air dormitories Teady for use before the holidays. It. was still intended to limit the boarding roll to j 100, and the erection of the new dormitories would leave the old ones available for other purposes, for which they are urgently needed. TEMUKAThe pupils of the Temuka Technical School's shearing class Rave a demonstration of tho work they are doing in Mr McCully's woolshed ; on Saturday afternoon. There are nine pupils, who are fortunate in having Mr W. Goodman, an expert shearer, as their instructor. During the afternoon Mrs MoCully, assisted i>y Miss M and others, entertained all present to afternoon tea, which ■was thoroughly enjoyed. • • •
