marshland. At the monthly meeting of. the School Committee. Mr D. Good© presided . The headmaster reported that the roll number was 101. Messrs F. Rogal and J. Blackburn, as a deputation representing the Roman Catholic Church, waited on the committee and offered 'to organise an entertainment for the l>enefit of the school funds. The deputation said that the Church realised the trreat bene«st it had received from the School Committee "by the use of the school for Sunday services, and wished in some small way to recom]>ense the committee. The chairman thanked them for their very generous offer and said the committee had very great pleasure in .accepting it and promised all the assistance possible. Correspondence was received from the. Board stating that the work of painting the school and schoolhouse would be proceeded with. At a. meeting of the Soldiers' Memorial Committee, Mr.W. J. "Walter presided. It was reported that the contractor (Mr sYiusor) was pushing on with the erection of the gates in a very satisfactory manner. _ Arrangements were made for the. inscription and names of soldier to be put on the pillars. Tho new Roman Catholic church is l>eing rapidly erected and will be an imposing ftr'ucture when completed'. The district is looking remarkably well. Splendid crops ' of onions and potatoes are to be seen everywhere. There is abundance of feed and good prospects of heavy h;;.y crops. Mr Chesnev, of Hills road, was successful in securing the red ticket for his pony at the Rangiora Show. The social arranged by the ladies' committee, in aid of the Catholio Church building fund,' proved a great success, the hall being crowded. Tho music wis supplied by Bradford's Band. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Blackburn, and the balloon dance by Miss "Wells and partner. Mr R. Roper was M.C.
WAIKUKU. A social was held last week by the Waikuku Mutual Improvement Society. Amongst those present were: Misses H. Bunting, T. Ellis, .M. Orchard, L. A m os (Rangiora), M. Sloane, Cathie McMillan, Rev. F. E. Foot, Messrs D. Collie, Malcolm Collie, J. Crooks, P. Ellis, J. Robb, D. Malcolm, Bruce McMillan, and D. Morriss. The Waikuku Methodist Sunday School anniversary services will be held next Sunday. Tho Rev. C. Blair will take the afternoon service, and the Rev. F. E. Foot the evening service. Special singing will be given by the children.
LADBROOKS. The weather during the last few days has been most suitable' for farming operations. The standing crops are bearing a splendid appearance, especially the Algerian oat crops, which are exceptionally heavy. Several will be ready for the reaper about the middle of December. The. clover yield is expected" to exceed that of. previous years. ... . Mrs J. "Watson, who recently went under a severe operation, arrived home last week, and is making a rapid recovery. A large number of friends paid Mr and Mrs E. Guilford, of Broadfields, a surprise visit. Cards, musical and vocal items,- and dancing were indulged in.
PREBBLETON. The Hall Committee's euchre tournament and dance was held in the hall on Saturday evening. _ The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Hayton 1. Mrs W. Hands 2 ; gentlemen : Mr A. Gallagher 1, Mr J. Hartnoll 2. ■ Music for the danos. was provided/ by Miss Mabel Griffiths. , > .• The large attendance at the funeral of Mrs R. Collings, of Hororata, which took place at Prebbleton 011 Saturday, testified to the high esteem in' which the deceased lady was held in this and the surrounding districts. Mrs Collings spent • her girlhood- and a .part of ner married life in Prebbleton, and her untimely, death came as a great shook to her. friends Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and family. .■ ■ SPRINGSTON. Lill, Baxter, Simpson, Neale, Merry "Wright (2),. Rev. Robertson. .On Sunday afternoon the Budden Loyal Orange Lodge, No. 48, held its annual parade and church service in the Public Hall. There was a large number of visitors from thf. neighbouring lodges. The preacher was the Rev. F. Robertson, of .Lincoln. "The musical portion of the service was in the hands of Mr ThvVaites (conductor) and Miss White (piano).
HALKETT. A surprise party visited -Mr and Mrs It. Watson to celebrate the opening of a new shed. The shed is a fine large building, and likely to bo in demand for dances next year. The party made good use of a good floor, and 1 dancing interspersed with musical items formed the evening's programme. Mrs Kelhani and Miss Turner supplied the music, and items were given by them and by Miss L. "Watson, and a duet by the Misses Turner. ... SPRINGBURN. The committee of the Tennis Club met in the schoolroom. Present: Misses N. Hannan, and A. Grieve, and Messrs H. Rutherford, A. Syme, C. Gundry, J. Johnstone, and C. Hinton. The secretary (Mr J. Johnstone) reported that he had ordered the net and .balls, and that the club racquets had been restrung. After paying all debts, there was a credit balance of £.3. The committee decided to hold the 'opening day next Saturday. It was agreed to ask the patroness, Mrs W. T: Smith, sen., to perform the opening ceremony, and the president, Mr L>r A. Syme, to make the opening speech. The raising of further funds was discussed, and it was agreed to hold a dance at the end of the month, and on New Year's eve.
MOUNT SOMKR3. - Owing to further outbreaks of measles, the school was closed by order of the Health Inspector.- School takes up again 011 luonuay next after tlie buifding has Lcen disinfected. Owing to the prevalence of measles, the monthly meeting of the Piunket Committee was not held last week. Nurse Nelson visited the rooms and saw several • mothers and babies, and also gave some good advice to those who have measles in their homes. HINDS. .JTho Loyal Hinds .Gddfellows' Lodge held a Church parade on Sunday afternoon. Headed by the Ashburton Ilegimental Band, they marched from the Oddfellows' Hall to the Hinds Hall, which was well filled. Bro. ltev. 1?. Mc-Colly preached an impressive sermon, emphasising the principles of Oddfeliow'sTnp. 31iss I. "Cook presided at the piano." After the service the Band gave a concert in Hinds No. 2 Domain, where a large crowd assembled to- enjoy the .music. The bandsmen arid visitors were entertained in the JiaJl by the members of the local Lodge.
