SHIPMASTER MISLED. OFFICIAL PILOT GUIDE BLAMED. -r ■ (mveux,"tbb pSMi.") AUCKLAND, November 17. . The Port cf , Auokland! authorities are to<lay chuckling over what they consider to be the joke of the year. The Chinese-owned, steamer . Ling"Kam; bound from Lima (Peru) to Hongkong, via Tahiti, Auckland, and Sydney, was not expecfjjd enter the .harbour, it havinx been intimated by the agents, Messrs HuddartParker and Co.j^that,. ovying -to the small quantity of ; cargo to. .be lifted,- tho vessel} .would lie outside the limit line. At seven o'clock precisely the Ling Nam dropped anchor just outs.de a line which her commander was ltd to • believe was the harbour entrance. It wasn't. Ho was a good two miles ins.de "the entrance, with every prospect of being politely furnished with a costly account for harbour dues,' which it -.H'.as hoped to avoid. That is why .the. port..authorities are smiling as broadly as. politeness will..pf.r'mit. /, Captain Cyril We3ton, ■ who has replaced. Captain.W. H. V. Waterson as commander of the Ling states that he- entered th?. harbour as the result of following directions. He producea the official sailing directions contained , in,. the "New Zealand Pilot," , a guide...to mariners issued under authority. . Thie. "guide", is. miles out. It defines thj entrance to Auckland harbour .aa follows: "The harbour limits are between lines drawn from the North Head and iiastion .Roc.c on the Eust, and ' from Stoke a Point lo Watchman Island (Sentinel Rock) on the we-st." Acting on this information. Captain Weston dropped his "hook" a little east of the line between the North Head and Bastion Hook. It was only a. little to the east- but it proved too far west to enable the shits to dodge payment of harbour dues, which it is understood, the Harbour Beard will*insist on xcliccting. • • Captai i Weston naturally considers that the New Zealand Pilot" should be brought up-to-date. In reference to the cable from Hobart regarding the Sir James Clarke Roes, Captain Larsen, commander of the expedition, when informed of Mr Pratten's' statement, said that the exemption Ihuicated was expected, but he had no intention of making "Hobart a-base,- as Stewart'lsland had alreadv ieen decided upon. A NAPIER DISPUTE. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEOBAV.) . JTAPIER, November 17. The watersiders at ixirt to-day accepted work on the lighters, but continued -their refusal to man the beirges, and the matter was referred to tho National Disputes Committee. Though some of the men assert the barges arc unsafe and not so enmfortable to work in as the lighters, it is generally admitted the dispute almost wholly is confined to pay. ' Tending the Arbitration Court decision in the recent applies, t-ion for a higher rato for men on barges, the pay 'Temainj at 2s 2J per hour. By the use of barges, the work of loading or un oading a liner in the roadstead is expedited, and the job runs out quicker than if onlv lighters are jiswl.. The men., therefore claim 3s per hour on barges, in order to make up the • difference in the am'"Unlearned on a definite task by the lightens.occupying a longer" time. The employers Tenewed their offer of twopence extra," butthe men declined.
