. —» ... CRUSHED BY ELEVATOR. A' man named A. Johnstone, a' lift attfnlant in Hereford Court, met-with au accident yesterday afternoon, tuffeiing a broken right leg. The lift ii an automatic one, and it started unexpectedly as Johnstone was stepping ih. It appears that Johnstone lost his ,balance, and when the lift was approaching the next floor he fell through the netting and dropped about eight feet to the floor. The injured man was attended by Dr. Stanley Foster, who sent hiin to the Hospital. ,He iB a married man, aged 69, residing at No. 372 Worcester street, Linwood, and had occupied the position of elevator attendant, at Hereford Court for about a month. Ho had previously been a lift attendant in the Dominion buildings. MESSAGE BOY KILLED. Hector Gordon McDonald, a youth 16 years of age, employed as a message. boy by Smith and. Anthony, printers and publishers, Manchester street, Christchurch, died in the Christchurch; Hospital yesterday afternoon as a result of injuries received through being run over by a horse-drawn lorry. At about 12 o 'clock the boy waß sent with a parcel to Redfern's, printers, also in Manchester • street, ami just as he reached the intersection of Tuam and Manchester streets he collided with the lorry, and was knocked down and run over by one of the wheels of tho vehicle. He was immediately taken I to tho hospital, but died a few minutes after admission. The apparent cause of death was fracture of the base of the skull and internal hemorrhage. An inquest was opened at the hospital last evening, and after hearing evidence of identification the Coroner, Mr H. Y. Widdowson, adjourned the inquest sine die. The twelve-year-old sen of Mr, K. J. Jay, of Christchurch, had a-n j eye injured on Saturday. A toy spring gun had been loaded with' a nail by a younger brother, and when it was fired it struck the other lad in the. eye. He is now progressing satisfactorily, the sight not having been destroyed. A man named Arthur Heney, aged 29"• of 24 Beckenham s'reet, was injured in the abdomen while workup in the railway goods shed yesterday. He was struck by a' fatting packingcase and was removed to the Hospital for treatment.
