Last year's show was of two j days' duration, while this year's fix- I ture w;i s confined to one day. M the invitation of Mr Andrew McFarlane, about twenty-live, members of the Ashburton St. Andrew's Presbyterian Choir held their annual picnic on his estate at Alford Forest on Friday. A selection of part-songs was sung, and under ideal weather conditions a most enjoyable outing was spent. Cycle Racing. t A nine-mile amateur cycle race of ' twice around the Allenton block was staged by the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon, when thirteen riders faced the starter. For the greater part of the journey the competitors had to contend with a fairly severe north-west wind, and the times were not fast. The race commenced from the Allenton school, and the following were the results:—J. JSTewitt, handicap 41-min, 1, time SOrain 14sec.: W. i Cartwrigkt (4-lniin) 2, time oOmin 17sec; G. Hewson (3-imin) 3, time 29min 34sec. An exceedingly strenuous effort over the last quarter-mile for fastest time was mado by C. D. Doyle and K. H. "Woods (both on lmin mark), when Doyle won by the narrowest hnargin, beating his opponent by onc-lif th of a second. His time was 29mia 25sce. Croquet. j A fair number of players assembled on tho Ashburton croquet lawn on Sat- j urday afternoon, when somo enjoyable ] friendly games were played. A buy and sell afternoon will bo played the first Saturday in December, the object being to raise funds to help pay for the enlargement of the pavilion. Tennis. There was a large gathering on the Tcmaro (Ashburton) lawn tennis courts on Saturday afternoon, when some good practice games were played in.preparation for an inter-club match next Saturday, when Dunsandel will play Tcmare, on the Temare courts. Obituary. The dcatli occurred yesterday afternoon at his residence, Beach road, Ashburton, of Mr H. V. Johnson. Mr Johnson, who was born in Ashburton, had been ailing for over five months prior to which he was in the employ of the Asburtou Gas Company. Ho was highly respected by all his fellowworkers and friends, and was, for 20 years, a member of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade. Mail NotiQo3.
