A match between old CoHegia-ns and Ashburton was played at Ashburton yesterday, the visitors, winning by 30 runs. Scores:—

has confirmed this, whilst even" now the period of danger has not yet passed. In the face of "this' it would be reprehensible' to. necessity for establishing, such reserves, thus rendering the Consolidated Fund liable to' be clairhed t upon. Whenever loss on the;T.eaiisatioii'of.a security :was sustained,j^^'ThOfhnge.^amount" at stake demands that ; the > reserve's '[ should be further strengthened. . "If is only bright that the' Common Fund should bear its proportion of. the expenses of management/.andValthough tho; critics contend thatc.the"amount is too high, the foregoing facts Swill showthat the. estates .concerned have not suffered any real loss. \ ' "According, to' Father .Dowling tho Public'.Service" Superannuation Fund forms part of "the .Common Fund, but this is : notvSo:':. This fund' "in common with" all' other.; Superannuation Funds and .certain": other .'funds erroneously stated; by <him to be; in the Common Fund under- 'the Public..: Trustee's adis specially- invested.' and receives "the.full income' : 'from its investments, subject, of cdurse, to commission for collection. "Finally the critics have not made it clear that those placing their affairs, in the hands of the Public Trustee may choose investment outside the Common Fund should, they.. so .desire. Whenclients come to the office the two systems are explained, and they have a free choice-. The absolute guarantee of their capital, the regularity, of their . interest and >the numerous other advantages of the Common Fund system influence .the vast majority to select it. Amongst these clients are men with" wide... and "successful business ex-' perie'nee. ■.-.-..' "Excluding the "Office reserves, tho amount in the Common Fund on March',3lst' last was £16,201,782 12s 3d. The amount specially invested was £2,278,733 "Jb.' The Common Fund system has stood' the test of 30; years and provides-one of• the chief benefits the OfSee can offer to the public, who show by the-use they voluntarily, make of it that they-appreciate its value. The Government has every confidence in the administration of tho Public Trust Office,, and judging by the expressions of appreciation it receives from the public" "and the large growth of business voluntarily entrusted to the Office, if is satisfactory that the institution also jfenjoys the confidence of the public - »"- -~*-' '-■■
