A FAREWELL FUNCTION.

Lord Jellico© took leave to-night of the Sailors' Friend Society. There was a large gathering. Sir Frederick Chapman, who presided. said great regret was felt in parting with his Excellency, aa his good service to New Zealand made them feel keenly how much the Empile pulled together. Sir J. W. Jack said Lord Jellicoe had endeared himself to New Zealandeds, and it was a case of "will ye no' come back again." The Rev. J. Moore, Messrs B. C. Waraes, and Godfrey also paid tributes to his Excellency, who was presented with an address and framed photo of the city. Replying, Lord Jellicoe said that the gathering showed the brotherhood of those who sailed th& seas. In the old dr<s one used to hear of antagonism between the naval and mercantile marine, but if it ever existed it disappeared on August 4th, 1914, and it had gone for ever as the two services were now one. (Applause.) The mercantile marine had/evoked tTie greatest admiration by the manner in which it performed its duty i n the face ot what might be called the inhuman dangers created bv an unscrupulous enemy. He eulogist*! the work accomplished by the Sailors' Friend Society, and added that the sailor deserved all that was done for him. It was a sailor, he said, who formed the British Empire, a sailor who maintained it, and once the sailor was let down the Empire would bo let His Excellency was heartily cheered at tlie conclusion of the function.
