The final shoot of the Grey Defence Rifle dul> for the vice-president's trophy * resulted as follows (three distances) J. • McKay (hdep. 3) 92, J. B. Young (scr) 90, C. Richard*>n (2) 89, W. Mclndoe (15) 86, W. Garth (2) 80. Rifleman Young is the winner of the trophy with an aggregate score of 288.
Cricket. . A meeting of the Southern Cricket Sub-Union was held, at Hokitika last evening, Mr J. O'Connor presiding. Mr C. J. King was elected secretary, Mr H, Caldwell delegate to the West.Coast Association. , '■ . ■ ' The following clubs entered teams for the competitions-.—Rimu, Kanieri, Hokitika A and Hokitika B. Weather Breaks. A drizzling rain, which commenced early this morning, and became heavier during the day, put a period to the spell of fine weather. A freshening of the pastures and the disappaarance of the dust nuisance will be the'principal benefits. Accidents. - Two sawmill employees—Richard Sullivan and John McMillan —were -admitted to tho Grey Riyer Hospital last e.vchiug from injuries suffered while working on the bush tram line of the Te Kinga Sawmill Company. They wero caught beneath a truck of gravel. Sullivan .was badly bruised about the chest and legs, while McMillan suffered a broken ankle. While working on the Rimu dredge yesterday- -afternoon, A. Reynish had the misfortune to suffer painful injuries to his hand, which was caught between some loss. Two of his fingers were amputated later at the Westland Hospital. Breach of Arms Act. Robert Spoor was fined 5s and costs at to-dav's sitting of the Court at Hokitika on a charge of having in his possession a quantity of ammunition. • Eeefton Improvements. Progress- of Blaketown. Blaketown is to be connected with the Greymouth borough water supply within the next few weeks, the, pipes for the system .haying been delivered this week from England.- They were ordered many months ago, and their non-arrival has been the subject of several complaints to .the Borough Council from the Blaketown ' Association. The new hall will bo opened by a public function on November 28th, Borough Council. The Greymouth Borough Council met to-i£ght. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfltt) and Crs. J. W., Greenslade, G. B. Harper,, A. Armstrong; E. Williams, F. A. Kitchingham, and T. B. Baty. An apology, ,for the absence. of Cr. H. F. DoogaJi, owing to illneßs, was received.. •
A motion of condolence with the Mayor-in his recent bereavement was carried.
The Greymouth Harbour Board notified that-it did not at present require the extension of the water supply to its quarry in Cobden. < A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs notifying its approval of the Greymouth war memorial.' The Mayor reported that a tender' for the improvement of the site would be let within a few days. It was decided to recommend to the Fire Board a site for a firebell tower at the north end of. the recreation ground. A petition from a number of residents near the gasworks, protesting against the' 1 erection-' of a tar-boiling plant there, was referred to the Finance Committee. . -
It was decided to increase the Town Clerk's salary- by £26 per annum. The recommendations of the Greymouth branch of. the Automobile Association regarding parking places were adopted: The sum of £5 Was voted to the .funds of the Chamber of Commerce, and a similar amount" towards the cost of the folder being issued'to advertise the district.
It was decided to ask-the Government to allow, one of its -engineers to report on a drainage for, the town.
