SIR lAN HAMILTON ON BOREDOM.
(IBOX OTTE OWK COBBXSFONSEirrO LONDON. October 9. General Sir lan Hamilton,' speaking at Scarborough, when the Lady Mayoress Handed him the proceeds of her 10,000 shilling fund for the British Legion, said when .we began tp be bored with life and to use the same cut-and-dried phrase to represent 'every idea, that was the beginning of death. "I had an uncle once, old Mr Bassett, of Tehidy, who was a millionaire. He owned the best bite of the best tin mines in Cornwall. As he was so rich he quickly used up his sensations, and when I remember him, if anyone told him some amazing piece of news, all he would answer was 'Ta-ranra-ra,' 'A Royal stag is eating the dahlias in the back garden,' 'Ta-ra-ra-ra.' 'There is a lady walking in the park without her crinoline.' 'Ta-ra-ra-ra.' "I had another uncle, a certain Mr Caldwell, who hung on to life for some time with only two words, 'possible' and 'impossible.' 'The-fare is five sbilings,' 'lmpossible.' 'We. are going: to have an accident.' 'Possible.' ,Or if he said the opposite the. words would do equally well Thousands of my friends go about the world seeing or listening to new and sensational occurrences, And all ; they have it left in them to say is 'Really?'! or 'ls that so?' or 'How very funny.' They live, but they are finished,
I "Believe me, life is, still full of surprises. Life, in fact, has always fresh happenings; in reserve.'.'
