MISCELLANEOUS CABLES.
The police have detained a young man in regard to the death of Mrs Dawson at Yallourn (Victoria). It is believed from the nature of the wounds inflicted that she was killed by repeated blows with a small axe.
In Sydney the hearing was concluded of tho charge against McCarthy and, Cullen .alleging that they could toe-v-ent the expulsion of Murphy from til© Australian Labour Party if paid a sum of money. Tho Court found the charge was not sustained, and the accused were discharged.
The British Consul-General at Boston (Mr Gray) was instructed by tne British Ambassador (Sir Esme Howard) to attend the funeral of Senator Lodge on Tuesday, and place a wreath on the grave on behalf of the British Empire.
The Austrian railway _ strike was settled on the arranged time and wages basis, and Dr. Scipel is resuming the Chancellorship.
The Mexican Foreign Secretary, Senor Senz, states unofficially that preliminary steps are being taken to resume relations with Britain through the friendly offices of the United States.
Strikes have thrown idle five actional Northern NeAv South "Wales colJeries. The stoppages occurred over local disputes. There are now 12 colleries idle and the total number of miners unemployed liis increased from 17C0 to approximately 3500, with every prospect cf the number increased.
The Tasmanian Legislative Assembly passed a Bill providing for compulsory voting at elections.
The Australian Lawn Tenuis Association lias received advices from Pari* stating that the Australian tour of Davis Cup players has been abandoned.
