THE COUNTRY.
KAIKOURA. A beautiful wreath composed of flowers gathered from "Tho Garden, of Memories," was forwarded to Christchurch by tho returned officers and men of Kaikoura, to bo placed on the Bridge of Remembrance on Armistice Bay. The Clarence ferry is again open for car traffic. There was an enthusiastic assemblage at the Suburban Hall on the occasion of the Convent School danc©, in aid of the school funds. The music was supplied by Mrs Chapman, Misses M. Eaton, Wareham (2), Macklo (3), piano, and Mr S. J. Mogridge (violin). Miss Macklo and Mr Mopridgo won. the spot waltz competition. Mr S. Sharpo was M.O. As a result of the dance there will be a substantial surplus towards tho object aimed at. Tho Kaikoura Swimniinp Club will open tho season on Saturday with a programme of snorts. Afternoon tea will be provided. The members of the club are carrying out a scheme of improvement in tho way of planting, etc. The Kaikoura Tennis Club intend holding a dance and bazaar at an early date, 'with the object of securing funds to lay down a new concrete court. OXFORD. At the monthly meeting of tho W.O.T.U. Mrs G. Ryde (president) presided. The devotional exercises were conducted by Miss Gainsford. A vote of sympathy was passed to all members who had been prevented from attendinz through illness. Correspondence was received from the secretary or tho School Committee, and from a member who had been ill. It v ' as ,," cided that a letter be scnt_ to Mr MeM.P., thanking him ana tho Labour Party for the fight they put up against the Gaining Bill. A paper was given by one of the members on tho constitution, which was very much appreciated. CUST. On Monday evening the members of the football, hockey, and tennis clubs gnvo a dance in tho Instituto Hal] in honour of Miss Alice Crysell and Mr Toiii Coulter, whose marriage took place on Wednesday. There was a large attendance. and a very happy time was spent in cards and dancing. A solo by Mrs Richardson was much appreciated. The music for the dancing was provided by the Gust Jazz Band and Mrs Brunsden, Miss I. Bevington, and' Mr L. Tyler. Messrs B. Henderson and F. Burgessi were M.C.'s. On behalf of the' combined clubs Mr S. Smith presented the guests with a handsome dinner set. The Rev. G. Howes and Mr B. Henderson (captain of the Football Club) also spoke, and wished tho couple every happiness in the future. Mr Coulter very suitably responded. Miss Crysell was the guest of honour at a china afternoon, when the hostesses were Mrs J. Cowens and Miss Cooper. The afternoon was very pleasantly spent iu competitions, games, and music. The winners of the competitions were Mrs Acheson (2), and Mrs G. K. Crysell. A vocal item was given by Mr? J. McKenzie, and a recitation' by Mrs Tull. After afternoon tea had been served Miss Crysell was asked to open the parcels, which contained a collection of beautiful china. Miss Crysell suitably thanked the donors. The following have been selected from the Eangiora Cricket Club to play in the trial games in view of the representative match with Christchurch: — P. H. Smith, H. K. Kippcnbergcr, D. E. Burns, H. Haughey, W. E. Barwick and G. Mehrtens. BELFAST. Afc the last meeting of Court Star of Belfast, A.0.F., C.R. Bro. J. Hey piesided. Two Brothers were reported on the sick list, and their allowances were passed for payment. The matter of making the Court meeting more interesting was introduced by Bro. Thomas, and after a, great deal of discussion it wan decided to holdi a ritual competition among members. P.C.R.'s Bros. G. Brown and W. Price were appointed to take charge of the competition, and to draw up rules and conditions. C'.R. Bro. Hey and P.C.R. Bro. \V. Price reported having attended the half-yearly meeting of tho Canterbury District Court hold at Court Loburn, and detailed the proceedings <>f that meeting. P.D.C.R. Bro. Rudkin, as a memb&r of District, also outlined the proceedings, and explained several points. It was decided to hold a euchre match next Court night between teams picked by the C.R. and S.C.R. The receipts for iMi© evening amounted to £25 ss'6d, and the expenditure to £4 12s. WEST EYRETON. The ladies of the Oust Presbyterian Church held a very successful garden party at> tlie residence of Mrs Conn Mcintosh, in aid of tho Christchurch Presbyterian Orphanages. Mr Rule and Miss Murray gavo a, resume of their work irt connexion with the Homes. Competitions were held, the winners being Mrs Wollf and Miss Cowans. Mrs MeKenaie sang. As a result of the afternoon, Mr Rule took away with him 133 dozen eggs, and 1 a box of groceries. .Those present were Mesdames X. Horrell, J. E. An interesting address was gi\ eu to the members of the Mothers' Lnton y Mrs Pike, of Christchurch. . Tho final lecture of the home nuismg class was given by Mrs Bishop day afternoon, when several Tutors ere present. Opportunity was to make a small presentation, to Mrs iiishop as a memento visits. Mrs i? w Carpenter, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs Bishop for the careful and painstaking manner in which she had dealt with studied by the class, and affored he* of the keen interest - work bv all the members. Although the morning had been wet, the afternoon proved fine and a- very eiyoyablo time was spent in tho beautiful grounds, Mrs Boag and the Misses G. Soag and 15. Lee, cradle roll superintendents, being indefatigable in their efforts to entertain their guests. Swings were provided for the children and tenuis, bowls and games made the time pass quickly. Afternoon tea was served in the plantation and before leaving for home each child was presented by Mrs Boag with a bag of apples, sweets, and nuts. . , The Rev. A. 3. Morrison is at prosent in Palmerstcn North, attending the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. He will spend next week visiting friends in Auckland. The Rev. E. N. Blakiston, of St. Mark's Church, is spending tho week in retreat at Burnham. . ■ The Hov. E. Alexander js attending the South Canterbury Methodist Synod at Timaru. . . ~ On Tuesday evening m St. Marks Schoolroom a meeting of workers in connexion with the parish fete was held, Mr H. Barlow presiding. The various collectors reported that wa'tenala for the different stalls were coming in well. It was decided to meet at the hall next week to make the final arrangements.
ROKEBY. On Monday evening a large number of the residents ot Rokeby held a dance mMr J. McPhail's granary. The occasion was a farewell to Mr W. McDomldwhoiß leaving* to take up land at Winton, Southland. On behalf of those present Mr 11. McPhail presented Mr McDonaid with a pocket wallet and expressed the general regret of the people of Rokeby at his departure, and wished him happiness and prosperity in his new home. Mr McDonald suitably replied. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Hector McDonald and extras were played by Misses Hooper and Tregenza. Mr G. Hcbper was M.C.
