CAPTAIN JONES, OF ATHENIC. (PHBSS ASSOCIATION TBLIGBAIi.)

WELLINGTON, November 12,

Advioe has been received by the Shaw, Savill Co. of the death of Captain J. L. Jones, of the Athenic, on November Bth, sis days after leaving Balbop, for Auckland. The vessel is due at' Auckland on November 24th. The deceased was formerly chief officer ol the lonic, and commander of the Gallic, Medic and lonic. On the retirement of Captain Grassland, he was appointed to the Athenic last November.

At the height ox his career, doctorates and medals from universities and learned societies all over Europe and America were showered in upon him. MR C. MARTIN. General regret was felt in . Linwood on Monday when the news of the death of Mr 0. Martin, who resided at No. 12 Haast street, became known. He was in the employ of the Oh list church City Council for over 46 years, but retired four years ago on superannuation. He arrived in New Zealand in the ship Stone House, with his wife and daughter over 50 years ago, and had resided, in Linwocd! spice his arrival. He gained the resrrect of his felkwworkors, and everyone else he came in contact with. He was born in Arrow, Sussex, in 1848. He leaves a widow and family of four sons and fivo daughters, 43 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, to mourn their loss.

' The funeral took place yesterday at Avonside Churchyard. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. 0. Fitzgerald. The following 6ent wreaths: Mr and Mrs T. The death occurred at Wellington this week of Mr Prank Dwan. The deceased, who died under an operation, was. tlio eldest son of the late Sir Alonzo Dwan. and tho nephew of Messrs T. and L. Dwan, af Wellington. Ho was an old pupil of St. Pa.t----i-ick's College, and had been very ill for ?omo time, owing to an accident to his eyes, and had been partially blind for a number of years.
