CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
METROPOLITAN MEETING.
CANTERBURY CUP AND N.Z. OAKS.
Yet another sample of Canterbury Spring weather, a highly agreeable one, was vouchsafed for tho continu. ance of the Metropolitan Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club at I!k'carton yesterday, when delightful sunshine and just tho suspicion of an easterly breeze conduced lo make tho conditions ideal t'or the big crowd tempted out of town by a particularly attractive card on which the Canterbury Cup, the Jockey Club Handicap, and the New Zealand Oaks wero the outstanding items. The course was harder than it was on Saturday and Monday, but it still was in excellent order, and a number of good performances, as recorded by llio watch, were put up during the afternoon to testify to the fact. The two and iiquurter miles of the Canterbury Cup were covered by the winner, Gold Light, in 3m 525, Mr Huzlctt'a maretherefore sharing the Australasian record for the distance with Gasbag, who won the raco in the samo time two years ago. Wild Hind got over tho mile of the Jockey Club Handicap in lm 395, a feat that has been only onee excelled, when. Tho Hawk and Anomaly covered tho distance in lm 38 4-ss, and only on one other occasion equalled, when Limelight won last year. Starmist occupied 2ni r.G 2-us in winning tho Oaks, but the record is held by Kazzilo Dazzle, who won last year in Cm 345, while yesterday's time has been beaten by Desert Gold (19ii>), Impediment (1917), Palestrina (1922), and the dcad-Uoaters Enthusiasm and Gold Light (1322). Still the figures fehow that thp going was extraordinarily goocf yestorday, neither tho winner of tho Jockey Club Handicap nor tho Qaks yet taking rank as a Jiigh-clags performer. Tho emeecsp of Gold Light in the Canterbury Cup was greeted by a much heartier demonstration of popular approval than ip usually extended to a winner at Kiceartou, the public bearing in mind her gallant struggle in tho New 25e»land Cup following upon, a similar display ill the Wellington Cup. Tho maje started aetual favourite, but her three opponents all wero well backed, and the single dividend she paid may bo regarded q.s a good price. The quartet ran in fairly close order to tho five furlong poet, where Count Cavour began to tire, and a little further on the favourite was momentarily shaken up to take the lead, but the two of her opponents having had enough of it at the distance she came on to win very easily by eight lengths jfrogi Loughrcg, who heat Sunart by thrfio lengths, while Count Cavour was two lengths farther hack. Gold Light meeting Suqart on 171b better terms thnn sho did in tho New Zealand Cup, s£d in addition to this she Was looking brighter than she did on Saturday, hut even her immediate connexions 4>4 expect her to dispose of tho opposition SQ easily ap she did. SuggQstipn was backed down to a very short price fof the Jockey Club Handicap, and ho seemed at the distance to bo getting tho fcept of the struggle, but at this point Wild Hind bega» a wollaostaincd run which carried her far enough to beat the favourite by a neck. The winner was the outsider of the whole party and paid a dividend appropriate to her position on the totalisator. Dazzling Light, tho half sister to Gold Lightly Kilbroney from Simper, who fared badly at the Wellington Meeting, laut won the Spring Plate here nicely on Saturday, was served up a hot favourite for the Oaks, Staraist and Baweno b6ing tho only others backed with any spirit. She was in a good positipn during the early part of the journey, but gbe seemed to get into some tyoiihlo coming" round the turn for horoej and. though she" made up ground in the straight Starmist, who had t?kep command ruuning along the back streteh, easily maintained her l?ad to v/ia decisively by two lengths i'rop the favourite, who beat Clarinda by similar distance, Staripist is a half-eister to Starland and Limelight, by Autumnus from Stardanccr, a daughter of Martian and Stepdancer. Sho showed gome form' last season as 3. two-yaar-old,' in four attempts winning the Buuediu Handicap' and the Juvenile Handicap at the Dunedin Sunuoor Meeting, and finishing 'third to Tresha© and Gamcbag in the Cham-' pagno Stakes at the Piinedin Autumn Meeting. This peason, previous to her success yesterday, she had finished third.to Kilfano in tho Tinwald Handicap at the Aehburtou Spring Meeting, and had run outside a place in the Dunedin Guineas, won by Count Cavour. The totalisator business during the day was briflV, tho investments on tho maehino reaching Ssl,3Ci) fl3 against i.46,202 on Iho corresponding day last year, au advance of £ 51(57. This advance extinguishes the falling off of investments on the first two days of the mooting, and leaves a net advance for the thrqc days of £1671. Tho following are details oi; the racing:—

The Spring Nfirseiy. Shirley was made an odds*on favourite for the two-year-old race. Always in front, the Absurd —Hoy filly ha.d the race won after going three furlongs. The only opponent to keep her at all busy was Victory Bond, who beat the rest as easily as she was herself hcaten-
The Ot&io Plate. Palcstrina was made an even-moJjey favourite for the Otaio Plate. Beginning smartly, the Clarenccux mare led for nearly a furlong, and was then eased into fourth place, where she stayed until the half-mile 'post waa reached- She then went after the leader, Sfoontain Lion, and vigorously ridden won by a neck. At one ctsge jt looked as if Mountain Lion would win ea?il>\ To show that tha' race was run. at a solid pace it is only iecasasiy to state th»t the last xhile was ran in lm 49s by Mountain Lion, and Palestrina 'gave him a good four lengths' start. The rc»t of the iield were etmng out a lon|f wjy.

Gold Light favonrite, and there was never niueh between them. All four wero well supported; in fact, there was not much difference bctweeu first favourite and fourth, it being the most even betting race over seen on the course for a classic. event. Count Cavovr Bet a solid pace, the first six furlongs being run in Jnj 19 3-ss, one mile and a quarter in lis, one mile and three-quarters 3m 1 2-ss, and full journey of two and a quarter miles in 3m 525, whieh equals Gasbag's Australasian record. Private wateh.es made it 3m 51 2-os, and (Jold Light simply spreadeaglcd the opposition. Loughrea was going np and down in the samo place at the finish, and Snnart was done to a turn, while Count Cavour collapsed three fnrlongs from home. The hand' some chestnut mure simply cantersd home, and had it been necessary would have broken tlie Australasian record to atoms. Sho is easily the best galloper :n New Zealand. Count Cavour's performance docs not make him a good three-year-old.
A Popular Win. Suggestion and Eoyal Divorce were backed for tho Jockey Club Handicap in no uncertain manner, and both were beaten on their merits. The race was run at a grea\ clip, but the whole Held was in close order to the home turn. Once in the straight, tho licld lined across tho course, and it was a pretty roco. Suggestion on tbo inside and Wiid Hind on the outer were going best, and beforo reaching the distance post this pair had drawn clear of tho rest. The Silly eventually beat tho Kilbrquey gelding cloverly. She recoived an ovation on returning to scale. Iler email rider must bo comipepded for the capital race ho rode. Always well placed, ho saved his mount for a final run, and jiever losing his U«ad Hppt at l>cr with bauda and heels ■without resorting to the whip as most youngsters would have done. Jloyal Divorce, who carried the confidence of his people, was fairly beaten into fourth place.
Tfco Race. It is a long time einco a field of eleven went to tho post for the New Zealand Oaks Stakes, Dassling Light was made favourite, but she did not earry much more money than Starraigt arid Ttiwcnc. The fillios ]ook<xl in good but it ia doubtful if they wore a-very good lot. '|Uo start wsj.s good, and a fairly good pace w<jp sot. The first half-milo was run in 54 l-ss, d'Mflg which there was a. lot of chopping and changing of positions. Tho milo wqs rim in 1m 46 l-ss, with Stamist and Clarinda iij front; then Emerson on Starmiet went tor home as fagt jib hia mount could step it, andi getting a good break, was four lengths ulew of DazsKng Jjight the distance poet, and he eventually won by a good margin. Tfco field was strung put a lqng way a3 the lopelope was passed..
Tfee Asitiey ji^iicap, The apprentkea had a race for themselves in the Aphley Handicap, and tlioy handled theii* mounts very well, the three lads who rode the placed horses especially eo, Tho n?ost vigorous of them, J. TJie Atoo Woltor. Moorland looked aa if he would win all tho way in the Avon 'Welter, but B. Roed a beautiful race Fool's Paradise, and, making a drive one hundred yards from the poet, got up to beat Moorland by . a good neck. The rcat were we]l bea-ten.
