BOXING.

DEMPSKY DEFEATS BLACKBURN.

The Christehurch Sports Club's forward policy jn staging the DeinpskyBlackburn fight in the open-air stadium in English Park, proved its popularity last night, when about 1500 boxing fans attended. Tho stadium was excellently lit, and a good view was obtained from all parts. Special cars were run to tho Park, and the club had all arrangements working vcrv smoothly. The crowd was treated to ono of the finest boxing exhibitions seen in Christehurch for some time. Three amateur bouts, each of six two-minute rounds, preceded the big light, and made excellent curtain-rais-ers. Tho judges for the amateur section were Messrs M. Ballin and A. L. Jones, and the refereo was Mr It. S. Draper. Mr W. Page refereed the professional contest, and Messrs W. J. Moir and 11. S. Draper were the judges. Descriptive results are as follows:

AMATEUR BOUTS. Feather-Weight. T. G. Wright, Sat «lb r. J. Kelly, Ost 4lb: Kelly had tho best of the nr3t three rounds, putting in a> lot of work with his right. Wright swung a little wildly, eeldom landing a really effective blow. Kelly reliedj chiefly on swift ayccessivo blows in his infighting while his opponent bided his time, Bending in infrequent but solid rights. Round four was fairly even. Kelly had 4ho lead in round five and the last round saw Wright working liko a nigger. Kelly's body blows, however, stood him in good stead and he got tho decision.

Welter-Weight. TP. Blvey. lOst 71b v. F. Petre, lOst 12lb: Elvcy milled in from the first round and sent in some stinging rights. Petre retaliated with left uppercuts, connecting to advantage. Both men fought hard, hut Petre Rtado tho mi3tako of telegraphing his hits. Petre sent in a worrying l left in the last round, connecting with the jaw. Just towards the end of the last round Petfe rocked in a left which sent his man to the canvas for six when the gong rang. This gained Petre tho bout, on points, making a sensational finish. ;

Light-WeigW. H. Hampton, Etei 6lb v. C. "VV. Gahagan, Sat 71b. The first round saw some likely exchanges. In the third round, Hampton, woke up and took up the attack, getting his man rattled. In tho fourths round Gahagan went down for six, the gong' saving him. The last round saw both riien tired but game with Gahagan leading slightly. Gahagan was awarded the decision.

PROFESSIONAL BOUT. Paul Dempsky, 9st 91b v. Clarrla Blackburn, lOsfc 71b.

In the first round Dempsky's neat lefts and his clever dodging tactics gained him points. Blackburn retaliated' with a downward rijht.' Dampsky treated the crowd to 8. pretty exhibition,. Blackburn relying mainly on his weight.

In v the third round Blackburn rained in a series of snappy lefts and rigir.a in quick succession. Both men were fighting beautifully with very liltlo difference between them..

In round five* Blackburn started to connect with Demnnky'p face, pasting him on the nose continuously. In round seven JUcmpsky sent in several telling rights to tho body and the jaw, keeping his man well on the defensive. Blackburn then brought a jabbing lelt into play, connecting with, the side of the head. Biacnburn's smothering tactics saved him a good deal o£ punishment, and ho followed up his in-fighting with a. lightning leifc and right. Round nine saw both men milling hard with little advantage to either. In rounds ten and eleven Dempsky was fighting his man off very -prottily, but nothing of ony weight was exchanged. In twelve Blackburn sparred for an opening, found it, and rocked in coo or two solid ones' to tho head and body. The ©ace increased in the fourteenth round,' Blackburn getting in an occasional effective right cross. Towards tho end of the round, however, Dempsky had his man rocking. Tho last round eav? both men fighting hard with Dempsky practically as fresh aa when he started, and Blackburn distresDed. ' Dempsky won on points, and tho decision was a popular one. Tho Sports Club can be congratulated on the excellent standard maintained throughout the programme. Tho Club intends to run monthly bouts until Easter, and, given warm weather, they should bo Sure of Urge, patronage.
