The late Sir Peter Mackie, the wellknown distiller, was once the hero of an exploit almost unique in- its daring character. When Mr A. J. Balfour (now the Earl of Balfour) tenanted Strathconan, eagles were carrying off. lambs on the estate, and Sir Peter (then Mr) . Mackie voluntereed to rob the eyrie of the young for whom the eagles stole. Lowered 10 feet by a rope down a steep crag, Sir Peter crawled into a dark cavern, littered with freshly-killed prey and the remains of former feasts, seized the two young eaglets, putting one into cither pocket, and was hauled up to safety before the parent eagles returned. The eaglets are still to be seen, stuffed, in the Scottish Museum, Edinburgh. % ■ ' ' - .
