THE WATERFRONT
♦ AUSTRALIAN TROUBLE. SHIPS LAID UP. j I*? cable-Weiss association— copyright) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, November 4. As a result of the watersiders' overtime strike, several cargo steamers will be laid up immediately and, in order to avoid congestion in the various ports, it may be necessary to lay up more tonnage. ' The Trolley and Draymen's Union has not yet • been officially informed of the watersiders' action, and its members are doing nothing in connexion with the trouble. It is reported that the steamer Ferndale, of the Commonwealth Line, which does not employ bureau labour, had to refuse a cargo of 5000 tons of wheat because of the attitude of the wharf labourers. This cargo will now be carried by some other vessel and loaded by bureau labour. (Keceived November 4th, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 4. The Commonwealth Line steamer Ferndale was held up to-day, because the waterside workers declined to load her, on the ground of alleged employment of non-union labour aboard. Later in the day, after negotiating, the loading of the Ferndale was started. It is understood the waterside workers agreed to withdraw their objections. ~
