MT. HUTT ROAD BOARD.
[ MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mt. Hutt Road Board was held on Monday afternoon. Air Jas. Carr presided, and there- were also present—Messrs T. S. Harrison, F. W. Ruddenkiau, and John Watson. An apo.ogy for absence owing to ihness was received from Mr fc>. Or. Holmes. In connexion with the erection of the new trucking yards at Methven railway, the chairman reported that trie District Engineer of Railways, Chjistchurch, had recent.y visited Aiethven, and ho and the clerk had interviewed him, along with Mr J. W. M. Dart, solicitor for the owners of the adjoini ing land. As a result of this conference, it | wa3 hoped a satisfactory conclusion had | been arrived at, and the work would be carried out. The Works Committee of the Ashburton County recently conferred with the | members of the Mt. Hutt Road Board with reference to the piping of the main water I race through Methven township. The County Council was prepared to rind the pipes if the Road Board wotud assist with the cost of laying them .ud the necessary filling. Adjoining property-owners would be asked to assist with the cost of the wow. In regard to Keane's pit, it was decided to supply the necessary hurdles and posts required and pay a royalty for shingie removed, Mr Keane to fence the pit The clerk reported that some unauthorised person was felling blucgums on Reserve 1882 and aeked for instructions it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman and clerk. _ j TEe question of crossings suitable for heavy traffic over the kerbing in the new j channelling area on the east side of the main road was discussed, and it was decided that property-owners could either put j in concrete or hardwood crossings; if the latter, the sizes of the timber to be used to be -specified. A letter was received from the Methven Caledonian Society asking for the use of the Board's grader to form a cycling track. It was decided to grant the request, subject to the usual conditions.
Wm. Brick's request for the stun of £l2for opening up a shingle pit was refused. The Methven Racing Club wrote drawing attention to the bad Btate of the approach to the racecourse, and asked that improvements be before the race meeting. The clerk reported that as the teams were handy he had had the work done. His action in the matter was approved. Applications for permission to plough roaa frontages for tie eradication of gorse were
received from Messrs Allen and Hawthorne, D. A. Boag, andi W. J. Chambers. Permit sion was granted, subject to the usual conditions. • . The Department of Agriculture adTiecd that the Board would have to take steps lor the destruction of rabbite on Reserve iSo. 1019. The clerk was instructed to ascertain the cost of fencing the reserve with wire netting. . , The question of the maintenance o* county roads was discussed, and the following resolution was carried, a copy to_be 'forwarded to the County Council:— "That f the Mt. Hutt Road Board is strongly in favour of the roads declared county roads I being handed back as district roads to the road board." | The Board's solicitors wrote forwarding their opinion in regard to a special rating area for the township. The Board now hav e the information necessary in connexion with any special work required in the township.
