FUNERAL OF LATE MRS R. SNELL.

The funeral of the late Mrs Richarc Snell took place on Saturday after'noon at the Bromley Cemetery. The Methven Ladies' Hoc-key Club and the Methven Cycle Club held a ! very successful plain and fancy dress .ball in the Methven Town Hall on Friday evening, in aid of the funds of the two clubs. Although the weather I did not favour the function, the hall [ was filled to its utmost capacity. Visitors wore present in large numbers j from Ashburton, and other districts were also well represented. The effective decorations —old gold and blackwere "the work of a small committee in charge of Mr F. A. Anderson, and they are to be congratulated on the results of their efforts. The music was supplied by Dabourno's Orc-he-stra from Ashburton, and extras were.played by Mrs Alexander Lawrence, Miss M&Kger, and Mr L. Alfred. The duties jrf M.C.'s were carried out by Messrs IX Anderson n.nd L. Dalt-on and Messrs F. .and D. Anderson, as joint secretaries, were indefatigable in their efforts to make the function a success. A number of special prizes, donated by residents of the district, were presented in addition to those awarded by the clubs. The judging of the costuin.es, worn by 150 iguests, was in the hands of Mrs Dickie (Lyndkurst) and Mr A. Simpson (Ashburton), and their decisions gave entire satisfaction.

The following were awarded the prizes: Best fancy costume, ladies —Mr} K. McCartney (Turkish Lady), Hiss Vera Smith (Auckland) (Chinese Lady), Miss Rita Jessep (Sheik's Bride). The judges were un-iblc to separate these costumes, and each lady was presented with a trophy. Best fancy costume (gentlemen)—Mr Percy Doherty 1 (Devil); Mr Arch. Duff 2 (Mexican). Most original lady's costume—Miss E. Grieve (Yea, We Have No Bananas) 1. Most original gentlem-in's costume— Mr W. A. Haden (Cannibal Chief). Beet impersonation (Mr Simpson's special)— Miss T.
