BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. At a meeting of the executive of the' Christchurch Beautifying Association, held on Thursday, Dr. Chilton presided. The following resolutions were carried: — "That this Society respectfully requests the City Council not to authorise any further 'hoardings in residential areas, and those firms making a practice of disfiguring the countryside with advertisements on trees and fences be written to asking them to discontinue the practice." "That a deputation from the Society and Citv Council, if possible, wait upon Mr Massey, ou November 11th, with reference 'to the addition to the Provincial Council Chambers, known as tho Deeds Department, on the north-east corner of Armagh street, that we suggest that this new portion, which has developed several cracks, be pulled down and an addition in keeping with the original plans be built in line with Bellamy's and (he tower opposite Armagh street. It was suggested that a sketch plan should be sumittcd." "That the attention of the Electricity Department, the Tramway Board, the P. and T. Department, the Waimain and Heathcote County Councils be drawn to the ruthless cutting of trees, and the Association respectfully suggests that any cutting back required to be done should be supervised by an experienced man." A letter was received from Miss Colthard asking for advice as to the best methods of forming a Beautifying Association for the improvement of Darfield It was decided to send particulars, also to state that members would be pleased to assist in the formation of an Association at Darfield. It was unanimously agreed to earnestly request the Heathcote County Council to take steps to have Gravel Reserve No. 112, on Valley road at the foot of llackthorne road, Cashmere, gazetted a domain or recreation reserve. This strip of land between the tramwav and the liiver Heathcote is capable" of being greatly improved, and the Association is prepared to assist in carrying out the work. It" was decided to postpone a discussion of Cathedral square and the latest addition* of telephone booths, as it was understood the City Council would be dealing with the matter at its next meeting. Mr E H. Andrews reported on hi* visit to Auckland, and stated that there was not much that Christchurch could learn from that city except in the matter of civic pride. # Gifts of plants were received from Messrs Ivorys, Ackroyd, Cant, Lawrence, and Smith.
