Five employees of the Standard Oil Company's pkmt in New Jersey are dead through inhaling tc-tracthyl lead fumes in experiments to increas© the efficiency of petrol, and forty-four other laboratory workers ar? undor treatment.
The gas produces in.=.anitv. and the five, victims died in strait-jackets raving maniacs. J-'ivo of those under treatment ;ire in a serioivs condition. Regarding the remainder the- m\spit,il authorities say some aiv s•.tfferinn; i'tun headaches, and othors from nrental disturbance and mild delirium. OtWr symptoms are low Woiml pressure and extremo aervousness. Physicians at first were at, a loss how to deal with the cases, hut now believe that injections of hyposulphite of soda are having a beneficial effect. The New York Health Commissioner lias now prohibited tho use of patrol treated with tetracthyl lead and similar action is expected elsewhere. State officials aro holding an investigation.
