HORSES DROWNED.

NARROW ESCAPE OF MEN. Mr 11. (1. Cross, of Oxford, lost two valuable horses in the Eyre River yesterday morning. In company with his assistant. he was coming into Oxford with his waggon and a tea of four horses. The river was in Hood, but it did not appear dangerous. While he was fording it, however, it rose rapidly, and one of the shafters went down as a result of being struck by floating gorae, Mr Cross thinks. The horse was soon in difficulties, and as the leaders were timid. Mr Cross dismounted in an attempt to lead them across. He was immediately swept down stream, the team and waggon following him. A barb-wire fence across the stream was the cause of further difficulties, but Mr Cross regained his feet and tried to unloose the horses. This proved a most difficult thing to do in the swirling stream, but he managed to get two of them out of the tangle. The waggon is still stuck fast in the stream. Considering the circumstances, it is remarkable that Mr Cross and his man were not drowned.
