A. AND P. SHOWS.

AMBERLEY. The tisua! luck ei th-.-P>re.--krs' Association forsook it yesterJ:iy ;j!'>nit::ely ;j n.l for the ;inji u:i 1 shovr h;j? T!..- woaiher yesterdav, hr.\ve\ er, 5! to wed a violent icvrrsal or' form. For the -4 ho'ivs preceding i 1 a.m. I" jioiitt? raii; vri ic recorded, bttt tliis down pour did nor by any niean? oh;>ii-' tin' v,t;irhrr. and a steady heavy in ai.'Mut IJ .of, wlu'ii operai ion? - n the ]o had just .<tnrted. and it- continued for upwards of an hour. Judges and st.ewi.rds had a a uticonuoriable time, the rain beiiifj accompariied by a decidedlv cold wind. However, they did not' diiwdle over their work—altlioujih a few of the stowards did in handing iu the awards —and the verj excellent luncheon provided by Mr Hejtdreji M>rvod vcrv 7tiuch to offset, the other disabilities. The Association was singularly unlucky in the matter of climatic conditions, as through the Ashlev .Downs .'"'d Kangiora districts the rainfall was confined to quite ordinary limits. The attendance of the public, naturally, Mas very small, ami it in fortunate that the Associat ion s sound iinnnciai position does not make this a matter of very great concern. 1 ho usual parade 01. prize stock was abandoned, as the conditions made it next door to impossible, although the weather at the time had cleared up. However, exhibitors were concerned about, their .-dock in the ''c.'iuld blast," and were wisely permitted to get Ihetu away as early as possible. The Caledonian I'ipo Band, from Christchurch, skirled bravely throughout the day, completely exploding the iSassenach theory that, the kilt is a. cold dress "whateffer." The entries this year were the best on record, being 188, as against 434 last year. Quality was uniformly good, but penned and tethered stock did not look as bright as they would otherwise have doue. The draught horse section, 1 hough small in numbers, was a good one, as it generally is at Amberley. Special interest attached this year on account of the exhibition of the recent-ly-imported stallion, Mr James Wyllie's Ellangowan. lie is a particularly wellgrown colt, a good mover, and has plenty of substance. He annexed the champion ribbon. Champion mare was ]Ur J. O. Coop's filly by Buchlyvie's Favourite, which also won the Association's challenge cup, value £lO 10s, for the best two-year-old draught colt, filly, or gelding. !Mr J. A. Fairweather Mas a heavy winner in the section. The harness and saddle horses are generally about the most noteworthy sections at Amberley. Many of the competitors subsequently appear at the Metropolitan Show. Thero were some old favourites yesterday. Miss E. D. Kobinson's White Heather won the saddle championship, with Mrs G. Iteid's Permit second, and Mr K. .Skevingtou'h The Orphan won the harness championship. All the light horse sections were well contested for, the ponies making a very attractive display. The, hunters were not impressive, a few of the entrants giving a very indifferent exhibition. Several of the sheep_ sections were good, notably the Corriedales, a few half-breds, and the merinos. In the long-wool sections; Mr J. A. Fairweather was a heavy prize-taker, whilst Mr W. W. Mcßae swept the board in tlie merino section, and Mr G. D. Greenwood iu the Corriedales. Messrs X. G. and 11. JJ. Bruce's entries did not come to hand in the merino section. There was good competition in the Southdowns between Messrs G. Fulton and J. H. James. The Greenwood Challenge Cup for exhibitor obtaining most points in the sheep section was won by Mr J. A. Fairweather for the third time, and it now becomes his property. Competition in the cattle sections was weak. Mr ]{. Peaeh was practically the only exhibitor in Shorthorns. Some nice Jerseys were shown by Mr G. Fleming, there being fair competition in nearly all the classes. The house and dairy produce display was up to the usual high standard established at Amberley. The sheep-guessing competition resulted in a tie amongst four competitors. The correct weight was 183 jib, and the nearest guesses were as follows, only a quarter of a pound out: F. Kesteven (Kangiora), 183-Jlb; G. T. McNalley (Sefton), 1831b; W. Aston (Ashburton), 18311), and H. A. Martin (Christchurch), 1831b. Several field competitions were abandoned. The following -were the judges : —Draught etoc.k, G. McLachlan; hackney and saddle horses, blood and carriage horses, J. C. X. Grigg; hunters, J. C. N. Grigg and W. Sand rev: cobs and ponies, W.
