THE WEATHER.

4 - A DULL OUTLOOK.

Aiore ram fell in Chrisu-hurch yester-d-iy. In the morning some fairly hoavy showers caino down, but later the rain ceased for some hours, although the sky continued to be overcast. In tho evening there was another period of showery we-ather which continued intermittently tor a few hour?. The effect, of tho rain is very noticeable in- and about, tho city, and lawns c.nd gardens axe looking beautifully fresh and green. A steady rain set in at Waiau ou Thursday morning, and continued almost without intermission throughout tho day and night. By 4 p.m. yesterday a fall of 2.37 inches had been recorded, making a. total of 5.71 inches for the month, and at midday it was still raining steadily. The ground has now received a good soaking, and a. few weeks of warm, dry weather would be beneficial. Peed is abundant, tho crops are coming on well, and the district in general is looking at its best. After several days of tine north-west weather at. Culverden, the conditions changed to a south-west wind on Wednesday night, accompanied by heavy rain. The whole aspect of the district has■ undergone a remarkabl'o alteration during the last month, and the crops present a pleasing sight. Sorue in the vicinity of Mouse Point, (Hanme.r road) will undoubtedly give a record' yield. On account of the abundance of feed, it. is expected that lambs will be ready for the market early. Many sheepfarmers are now regretting their failure to purchase stock when the market, was low. Without exception all have more pasture than they are able to find use for. Very heavy rain fell over North Canterbury on Thursday night and yesterday, particularly from the Amberley district northwards. The fall in the locality mentioned exceeded 2in. Judging by the condition of the riri and Ashley rivers the fall in the back country has also l>een heavy, a'.nd both branches of tho Kowai are .also showing an unwonted vigour. The country has reoeived such a drenching that all apprehension concerning tho crops should lie at an end. Heavy rain fell at Methven on Thursday and continued throughout tho night, 80 points. being registered for tho 24 hours ending tit 9 a.m. yesterday. . At midday it was still. raining hard. The weather changed again at Akaroa on Thursday morning, and a light southerly rain-set in, which continued at intervals well ou towards noon ef yesterday. The growth since tho downpour of a fortnight ago has been most marked, and with the additional two days' snaking now received, tile pasture and the cocksfoot crops should, a.s the season wears on, bo in excellent condition to reap the full benefit of • Nature's further supplies.

GRETA IN FLOOD. CARS HELD UP. The postal authorities ad/vised last night- that heavy rain fell yesterday in North Canterbury, as a, result of which the Greta was in flood. In consequence it was impossible fr.r motor traffic to • get 'through, including the mail car from Christchurch •to KaikoUra, and that from Kaikoura to Christchurch. It was expected, however, that through communication would bo' established this morning.
