ALLEGED GRAFT.
A SYDNEY ENQUIRY. (by cable—press association—COPYßlGHT) (ACSTHALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATIOH.) (Received October 30th, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 30. The sittings of the Royal Commission appointed to enquire into Cropley's allegations of corrupt practices in connexion with the City Council, opened to-day. A detailed account of the allegations already cabled was submitted. The names of three Aldermen—Walker, Charlton, and Shannon were mentioned in connexion with the allegations. Walker asked for an adjournment in order to obtain legal representation. Shannon said he did not know he was going to be drawn into the matter, but wanted to proceed with the ease immediately.
. Charlton said as his name had been mentioned he wanted to get legal representation. All agreed to aii adjournment till to-morrow.
[Recently a iSydnev resident named Cropley made the following charges: — il) That lie was approached by two persons who informed him that the City Council would pay him £14,000 compensation for the surrender of his lease of a certain city building if he paid them £IOOO. which, it was stated, was to be passed on to certain individuals. (2) That £SOO would not be)' accepted, as there were too many among whom the monev was to be distributed. (3) That if he did not pay the £IOOO lie would be granted £12,000 compensation, arid not a penny more. Cropley further stated that/he refused to pay the £IOOO as requested,, and that the Council fixed compensation at £12,C00, which he declined to accept.]
