MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

ESTABLISHED BY FARMERS' CO-OP. STAFF. During the war the employees of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., raised largo sums of money by voluntary subscriptions in order to assist their colleagues who had gone to the Front, or their relatives who had, to remain at home. When the war ended, and all cases requiring assistance had been deaif with, there was a considerable surplus, and the trustees of tho fund recently discussed the question of the disposal of this money.

It was decided that a memorial scholarship would be an eminently suitable way of perpetuating tho memory of those members of the slalf who had made the .supremo sacrifice, and, with this object in view, the Canterbury Education Hoard was approached to see if .something could be done in this direction. Tho matter was discussed at the last meeting of the Board, and it has now been arranged that wholarships, to be called "The Xcw Zealand Fanners' Cooperative Association fetarf Memorial Scholarship," will bo awarded every year on the results of the Junior National Scholarship examination.

If projK.sals in the Education Amendment Bill, now before Parliament, become law, tho two M'-holarships may be held afc the same time, and the total amounts that may be awarded to successful candidates will be £ls for town pupils and £.35 for country pupils. The .scholarships will be open to pupils who have Ijeen attending a primary school in tho Education District of Canterbury for six months prior to the examination, and will bo tenable for three years at a public secondary school.

As the amount available each year is limited, the number of scholarships to be awarded will depend on the place of residence of the successful candidates. If town pupiis head the list, the money will, of course, go further than if country pupils have to Ik? provided fr.T. The first awards will he made on the results of the forthcoming scholarship examination.
