(jzom: oun otcs coaaESPOxra.N-T.) LONDON, September 24. Lait week Messrs William Gray and Co., Hartlepcol, launched' the new steamer Kare'at, built for the Union Steam Ship Company. The ceremony was performed by Mrs Smith, wifo of tho superintendent engineer of tho Union Steam Shijj Company. Amongst those present wero Captain .it. Crawford, oi the owners' firm, Captain A. Moray, whi> -will take command" of tho Kaietu, and Mr W. ■E. Watson, ef Messrs Esplen'-s. Mr C. Hoxlsworth, the manuringdirector of the Union Steam Ship Cornpary, was unable to be present. The vessel will take the highest class on Lloyd's Register, .and is of tho following dimensions:—Length overall JJ2lft 3in, breadth 46ft Gin. depth moulded 36ft Oifl with poop, bridge, winch bridges, and forecastle. Tho hull is built with deep bulb angle, frames, cellular double bottom and largo a-'ter and fore peak: ballast tanks. There will be eight etcaim. winches and a warping winch ait, eight steel derricks for the quick hcr:dlin.g of cargo, steam steering gear aft, with teltuinotor control on bridge, hand screw gear, direct steam windlaas, stockles3 anchors, fore and aft rig, and lifeboats and a motcr-launch carried on AVelin davits. The and rooms for captain, officers, engineers, wireless operator, etc., are fitted in houses on the, bridge deck, and the ere.rn berths in the raoop aaid forecastle. Thero will bo electric lighting throughout, and wireless and all requirements for a first class cargo steamer are to be fitted. The triple expitsion engines, which are to be fitted by the Central Marino Engine Works of tbo builders, will have cylinders 25in, 41in, GSin diameter by 45in stroke, and three large multitubular marine boilers working at 2001b pressure, and fitted with Howden's system of forced draught. The "CMEW" steamship auxiliaries, also supplied by the Central Marine Engine Works, inc'uoe cMitrifug.'.l pump, D.C. !ieaier, pairs of independent feed pump-3, evaporate)-, general service and iwh ejector rjunrn, balla3t pump, and auxiliary condenser. The Karetu will probably be ready to go out to New Zealand-by the end cf October, and slw> will probably go into the coastal cargo trade.
