TWO NEW SUBMARINES.
(by CABWi—PJUtifl ABSOCIATIO K—CO* TBIQ8T) (AUSTRALIAN AND X.Z. CABIJS ASBOCIATIOK.) SYDNEY, October 28. The Minister of Defence (Mr Bowden) has announced that tenders for the construction in Britain of two modorn submarine cruisers, with a cruising radius of 3000 miles, have been called by the Federal Ministry. The work of construction is considered to be too specialised to be catried out locally. It is also doubted whether, owing to tho secrecy attached to the plans and specifications, the British Admiralty would allow the construction from its plans to be undertaken in dockyards other tliiiti those with which it is :a close touch. ■\Vheu Mr Bruce was in England, it was estimated that the cost of each submarine would be £350,000.
