Cilizens were brought out into the streets this morning by the loud clanging of the bell at the Central Fire Station. The brigade was out in remarkably fast time, but its services were not required, the outbreak having been extinguished by the application of a few buckets of water. It occurred in the rear portion of Messrs Mark Sprot and Co.'s office, the heat from a, copper used for preparing water for cleaning bottles igniting a wall. Boxing. Prior to their departure by the express, Dempsey and Baxter received telegrams from the Invercargill Boxing Association offering them a match in the southern town. The former, who left for Wellington, will probably be matched with Les Murray by the* local Association, the fight to take place at Greymouth on January 3rd. His next contest is with Clarrie Blackburn at Christchurch. Baxter left for Napier, where lie has his headquarters. G-rey County Council. At a special meeting of the Grey County Council, the bylaws for the licensing and control of motor vehicles were approved. Inquest. An inquest into the death of John Laverne Love, the boy who was drowned in the Blackball Creek on Saturday, was held yesterday at Blackball, Mr M. Gallagher, J.P., Acting-Coroner, presiding. The jury -returned a verdict that the deceased ivas aecidentally drowned in attempting to cross the creek when it was in a high state of flood. Outdoor Sports. On Saturday a ladies' hockey match for the Brooks Cup between teams representing Millerton and Reefton was played in pouring rain on the Reefton racecourse, Reefton winning by three goals to one. On tho same ground Denniston Soccer representatives defeated, Reefton by four goals to one. On their way home, the Millerton ladies' hockey team played Cronadun at Crori&dun, the latter -winning by one goal to nil. Monday Train. ! Complaints are being made at Hokitika that yesterday's train to t.hc Coast missed the connexion with the afternoon train south, with a result that Hokitika passengers were obliged" to i spend the night at Greymouth. Sunshine and Bain. For the week ending Sunday, there were 51 hours 16 minutes of sunshine at Hokitika, and 3.24 inches of rain. Salvation Army. A campaign by the Greymouth Salvation Army for its. self-denial fund resulted in the sum of £2OO being collected. Mining Matters. For the week ended Saturday the W'estport Coal Company shipped 9903 tons of coal, and sold locally 219 tons. The Millerton mine worked every day last week, and on Friday a new record for the Incline was established, 183S tons of coal being landed at the bins. Buller Rugby Union. At a meeting of the Buller Rugby Union, Star seniors were declared the winners of the Footc Shield. It was decided to forward the West Coast Union a cheque for £3 as its share of the gate at the junior representative match. A special meeting was fixed for Tuesday, when the dispute iu the Rival-Ranger third grade match will be dealt with. Hokitika School Committee. At last night's meeting of the Hokitika School Committee, it was decided to apply to the Railway Department for a train for the school excursion to Ross on Saturday. The committee decided unanimously to nominate Mr R. Wild for the vacancy on the Canterbury E'.luc-ation Board. Hotel Changes Hands. Tli« Seven Mile Hotel will be taken over shortly by Mr J. Robertson, of Cobden. The present licensee, Mr Is. Posehic-h, iiit-ends giving up business lor a time. Buller Progress League. At a meeting of tiie Buller Progress League to-night, a resolution was carried expressing disappointment thaC only £'50,000 was on the Estimates for the Buller Gorge railway, the mover saying this was playing with a great national undertaking.
