FISHING SEASON.
+ PROSPECTS GOOD. Anulor.s wno have iisiiod in various Canterbury urcunis state that. the prospects arc excellent lor t-lie seaRon. One or t'.vo good bags have been obtained from the -Selwyn. Last week a well-known (.'hmtehurch sportsman landed .several beauties li'om the Lower Selwyn. including a nice ten-pounder. Another angler had equally good luck, a ten-pour.der also coining his way with the ilv. On Labour Day a seven and a-hali'-pour.dor was caught with the that Coe s Ford, I pycr Sclwyiu a li\ e and a-half-po'.tnder being landed in the s;,nic vicinity on Saturday night. The former lish" provided good sport, taking bait an hour to land. There is staled to be a nice lot of iish at this lord. Tlio lish in tho Lower Solwyn are described as being in poor c-omiitirin. It is easy to get good results during the early and middle days of the week, hut owing to the number of motorboats on the river on Saturdays and Sundays, the bags are generally unsatisfactory lr<;m a week-ender's point of view. The Main Drain is stated to he lull of lish. but unfortunately they arc on the small side. Out of eleven he caught there recently, a Ohristchuroh angler could only put three in his bag, the majority being under nine inches. Good bags have been obtained from the north branch ot the Waimakariri. Owing to there not being any considerable flights of insects about yet, there is. generally speaking, not a threat deal of fly fishing to be had at present. In about a. fortnight's time it is considered that good Jiy fishing should be obtainable.
