BUILDERS' ASSOCIATION.
MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the Canterbury Builders' Association was held! last night, Mr L. Bull presiding over • a good''attendance. ' ' . " ■ A letter was received from the State Forest Service stating that it was pro-: posed to call a conference in Wellington early during the present year of all • Government and local authorities to consider the revision and standardisation of building by-laws throughout the' Dominion relating to the use of timber. [The full text of the letter appeared in "The Press' 1 on Monday.] Mr R. J5. Nightingale stated that building by-laws varied considerably in dilferent parts of New Zealand. In Wellington and Dunedin, for instance, they specified what should be used in buildings, but in Christchurcli ' the builder could do as he pleased. The letter was referred to the committee. Two remits for consideration of the conference of the Master Builders' Association to be held in Auckland in the near future, were adopted. They were as follows: — "That the executive again introduce piece-work clauses when nesv awards are being prepared." . "That the Apprentices' Act be altered to allow of one apprentice to two journeymen or less in any" branch oi the trade. A further proposed remit regarding the building of soldiers' houses was discussed in committee.
