Ar.-hbishop Kedwood, who will cele- !■:•:;:■.■ lii s episcopal golden jubilee on l-'ebninry LMth. has received the following cable from liome: The Holy Father has made you. i-cleb.rating your golden episcopal juldlee, assistant at the Ponti-i;.-:il Throne. The brief was des-p.-ii'-lied some time nfro. (Signed). Cardinal Gasoarri, .Secretariate of his Holiness. Bishops assistant at the Pontifical Throne rank immediately after' cardinals. They are always created counts nt the apostolic, palace, and belong to the Pontifical family. Towards the pope they hold much the same relation as cathedral canons do to their bishops.
The celebrations in connexion with the episcopal golden jubilee of his Craco the Most Rev. Francis Redwood, S.M., D.D., Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand, will begin at Wellington on Sunday 7, the L'-fth instant, and will be continued during the ensuing week. The actual date of his Grace's golden jjibilee is St. Patrick's Day (March 17th), 1924, for it was on that festival that he was consecrated in London in 1874. His Grace was then the youngest bishop (or one of the youngest) in the Church. To-day he holds, in a hale, virile, and highly-intellectual old-age, the distinction of being (for length of episcopal days) the senior bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. The golden jubilee celebrations have been arranged for the earlier date (February 24th), in deference to a cabled request from the Australian bishops, -who desire to take part in the ceremonies, but who must be back in their respective dioceses for St. Patrick's ' Day, Holy \Vee"k, and Easter. The Archbishop of Brisbane (Dr. Duhig). is acting as secretary to the Australian Bishops' Standing Committee for the celebrations; and much enthusiasm is being manifested across the Tasman Sea in connexion with an event .that, is rare in Australian history, and unique in that of the Roman Catholic. Church in this Dominion. The announcement of the jubilee has been received by the members of the Church throughout New Zealand with especial interest, and in the various centres committees • have, been formed to assist in carrying out the arrangements, which will be of a Dominion nature and extent.
