Tho Lord Mayor has circularised aldermen urging tho pressing need of increased accommodation at the Town Hall. He points out that tho structure is so massive that it cannot successfully be remodellod. The only solution of the difficulty is to resumo more land for building extensions. Ho suggests that the City Council should empower him to negotiate for tho purchase of the St. Andrew's Anglican Cathedral area. The Lord Mayor adds that nothing will be done to alienate the area without the approval of the Cathedral authorities. Though it is understood that the latter are not altogether averse to considering the proposal, any attempt to interfere with tho historic building, the foundations of which were laid in 1869, is sure to meet with strong opposition from a large section of the community. Admittedly, the Cathedral was built to meet earlier demands, and has become too small to meet the requirements of big modern Sydney, and tho proposal to erect a more ornate Cathedral in a moro commanding position has a good deal of influential support.
