STRENGTH REDUCED.
NO WARLIKE DESIGNS. (BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION COPIBIQHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND J1.2. CABLF ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, February 4. Tho Paris correspondent of the "Daily Mail," rebutting London newspaper charges regarding French warlike designs and ambitions, discloses that the army consists of 220,000 fewer troops than the peace strength in 1914. Tho tank battalions, owing to tho adaptation of newer conditions, have been increased from 31 to 48 since 1920. Tho air squadrons have been increased from 126 to 132, and the engineer companies have been increased from 165 to 207. Tho artillery batteries have largely decreased. The army since 1920 has decreased one-third. Out of a total of 350,000 troops, 123,000 are in duties which the Peace Treaty imposed. Tho period of service for recruit 3 shortly will be reduced to two and a-half years. * ii
