RAILWAYMEN'S GRIEVANCES.

WILL THERE BE A STHIKE ? (srsoiAi. TO "ths pbbss.") WELLINGTON, February 5. The various references that have been made in, the newspapers lately to the insistent demands of tho railway servants for an increase of pay are beginning to impress upon the public mind the possibility that there may be danger ahead, and people are beginning to ask one another if there is any possibility of the occurrence of a strike. There are some who think there is. It is not clear that the Railway Department can afford to give away any more than it is now giving, especially as it is still labouring under the incubus of a 44-hour week, a condition that probably exists in connexion with few, if any other railway systems in the world. ■»

This afternoon a deputation representing the employees, waited on the Minister of RaLways to put their case before him. The proceedings were private, and there is no official information as to what happened. It is understood, however, that no decision was arrived at, and that another conference,, or a continuation of tho present one, will be held in a day or two. ,
