ATHLETICS.

WAIAU SPORTS CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the Waiau Athletics Club hold a sports meeting which proved an unqualified success. The meeting wa3 somewhat ,of an , experiment, as the programme consisted -largely of school children's events, and the members of the Sports Committee are to be complimented on the success of their enterprise. Additional interest was lent to the proceedings by the presence of a number of competitors from the ilotherham. School, clsa Mr E. P. H. Bu'rbury's children who are under s, private tutor, and a family irorn Culverden. It is pleasing to note that these young' "sports" from a distanco met with a fair measure of success. Tho large number of entr.ea, thcra being a total of 245, ensured keen competition in all events, and there wad a number of close finishes, inches only, frequently separating the placed competitors. Therewere tluvty-three events wnich entailed a heavy afternoon's worit on the various officials, but there were ■no delays, and the programme was completed in good time. The gold medal, given by Mr H. ~W. D. Rogers, for tho best boy athlete, was won by Maurice Rogers (Waiau School), whiie that given by M'r W. Harnlyn for tho beat girl athlete was won by Alice Wa.ker (Sothcrham School). Will "Wallace, of tho Rotherham School, put up a fine performance in winning the Opan High Jump for Bchoolboys, with a jump of 4ft 4iin. It is hoped, by selecting a more suitable date, to make next year's meeting an even greater success. The president, Mr E.'P. H. Burbury, has expressed his intantion of giving a shield for competition among the schoolj in the Anrutri County, and it 13 intended to insert in the programme events ftr youths who have left school, but who are not yet equal to competing successfully in adult events.
