SCULLING.
hannan retains championship OF NEW ZEALAND. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.), BLENHEIM, June 3. A match for the Sculling Championship of New Zealand and a purse of £2CO, subscribed by the people of Picton, between Pat Hannan and "Jumbo" Wells, both of Blenheim, was rowed to-day on Picton harbour. The weather was wretched, lain falling in torrents all day, but the conditions were satisfactory for sculling, the water being like glass. A good start was effected, but Human, the holder of the championship, was obviously a class ahead of Wells, and drew steadily away. When half of the journey had been covered Hannan was leading by a longth and a half. At this stage Wells informed the umpire that his elide had broken, and he and hia boat wore picked up by a launch. Hannan finished the course alone, covering the distance in 21min 14sec. The attendance of the public was poor, on account of the weather. The purse was paid over in the presene of a big crowd at I the theatre in Picton. at night.
