WEST COAST NOTES.

WESTPORT MEMORIAL UNVEILED (press association telegram.) WESTPORT, June 3. In the presence of over 2000 people, Mr G. Mitchell, M.P., this afternoon unveiled the fallen soldiers' memorial, in the form of massive marble gates at the entrance to Victoria square. The gates were designed by Mr J. Mannings, of Christchurch, and the -memorial is inscribed "Gates of Remembrance," with the names of some of the most pominent battle centres. There is a memorial tablet bearing the names -of 190 fallen soldiers. Mr -Mitchell gave a very impressive addresv and as he unveiled the memorial a bugler played "The Last I'ost," accompanied by tiie tolling of a fire-bell, followed by the playing of the "Dead -March" by the Garrison Band, and the National Anthem. Mr Mitchell and Mrs Stephen, mother of a fallen soldier, led the way through the.gates, followed by the returned soldiers and the general public. Football. A town v. country match was played to-day, and was won by the country team by 14 points to 3. [ Community' Singing. The first community sing at Westport was held to-day, and was a complete success. "Copper Trail." A competitive "copper trail," worked on a blackboard, was held to-day, with the Surf (Jlub, Buller Ilugby Union, and the Hockey Club as competitors. The position of each competitor was recorded in feet as collectors who scoured the ground came in with their collections. The moneys collected went to the soldiers' memorial fund.
