ASSOCIATION.

WELLINGTON DEFEATS AUSTRALIANS. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEOBAM.) WELLINGTON, June 9. On a sodden ground, at the Baein Reserve, and under dismal weather conditions, the Australian Association team suuered the first defeat of its tour *t the hands of the Wellington representatives to-day by 3 goals to 0. Considering the extremely heavy turf, softened by several hours of steady rain, and an insistent downpour, which urove from the south right through, the game was an excellent one, and ranks as one of the krenest ana most exciting played under Association rules in the Capital City. Till half-time neither side scored. Within the last twenty-five minutes the home team secured three goals, the last two which were shot within ten minutes of the final whistleJ In mitigation ot the visitors' defeat, it must bo remembered that they cam® to New Zealand wholly unaccustomed to wet grounds, but making due allowance for this handicap, Wellington undoubtedly merited their win on the days play. The best section was their left wing, which , opposed the weaker division of the Australian eleven. Had the. visitors fed their left wing more consistently where the fast young forward, Thompson, wm on the alert, and dangerous to the home opposnion, the result might have been different. The Australian centre forwards were very efficient their combination being responsible for the heavy pressure made in' the opening twenty-five minutes of the second half. One oi the goals was due to a mis-kick by Fisher, the meat outstanding Australian back, cup probably to .the heavy nature of the hall. The Wellington defence generally was sound. Wellington were aggressive from start V end. ... Wellington mad© an immediate incursion into Australian territory from the kick off, and the left-wingers tried twice at goal. The Australians got the ball away temporarily with clever foot work, but Campbell reversed the movement, kicking out. Palmer attempted a long shot, the ball being fended off by Cartwright with a brilliant stop. Thomas sent it back again for Fisher to head it away. The visitors made a fast break away, and Dane centred nicely, but Ewing warded off a shot by Maunder.' Dane again took the ball away at hiß toe, but the referee whistled for a foul, which the crowd tcok badly. The visitors initiated an offensive on the lett flank, led by Thompson, who attempted. » shot, but Ewing made a brilliant save with his hands. Retaliation by the same side gave Campbell two chances to net, and on the second occasion the ball glanced off an opponent in the goal mouth, and narrowly missed. The barracking was exceptionally keen amongst the *OOO spectators and as the end of the spell approached without any score enthusiasm ran high. The p.ay was surprisingly fast and sure for the state of tue ground, every man on the field playing fine football. Wellington maintained the attack, but the defenders breaking away now and again caused anxiety around Ewing s goal. However, half-time came without any score to either side. _ „ . Shortly after resumption Thompson sent the ball from a corner, and the wind blew it into the net. A rousing cheer went up from the crowd, but the ball had not been played in Excitement became intense as the visitors strongly attacked, maintaining an offensive which" required all the initiative of the home backs to counter. Ewing several times saved brilliantly. Half-way through the spell when Wellington were attacking, Jones centred cleverly, but Fisher mis-kicked to Campbell, who slammed the ball in. Wellington 1. Australia 0. Some pretty footwork ensued, in a brief Australian movement, the ball baine dramatically ng-ragged across the fie.d by pretty passing* Gilbertson missed what should have been a certain goal for Wellington, but a few minutes later the missed nnint was irained bv Ballard receiving from Thomas, and deliberately shooting the ball into the centre of. the net. Two minutes before the match closed a collision bet'ween fWwrieht and an opposing forward in the conduded-WeUington 8, Australia 0. .
