Tho National Farmers' Union has memorialised the Government protesting against tho depletion of the countryside, where the shortage of farm hands is already acute. The Australian and Canadian immigration polieios, it says, are calculated to benefit the Dominions at the expense of British agriculture. The surplus population, which the Dominions do not accept, exists only in the cities and the towns. Those signing the memorial declare that British agriculture is losing its youngest and most skilful land workers, and that British food production must decline in consequence.

AUSTRALIA SOUNDED. .MELBOURNE, June 2A letter has been received from Lori Rawlinson, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, stating that 2000 young officers of the Indian Army wilt shortly be retired, and asking for information regarding the suitability of Australia and the prospects for their settlement. Each officer on retiring receives a. sura of from £IOOO to £ISOO as compensation. Tho Prime Minister (Mr Hughes) has replied offering to send a representative to India to give full information regarding Australian conditions. At Lord Rawlinson's suggestion, Mr Hughes is now obtaining from, the Stato Premiers particulars regarding available land and the terms of settlement. Mr Hughes states that a hearty welcome, will be extended to those officers. The country may be considered fortunate if it can obtain them as settlers.
