NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Beach Improvements. At a meeting of the Surf Club held recently, it was decided to alter and add to the pavilion, the present space, owing to the rapidly increasing membership, being totally inadequate. On Thursday tenders were invited for the addition, upon which it is understood the club purpose spending some hundreds of pounds. Personal The Rev. W. Walker, president of the R.S.A., has been officially attached as chaplain to the local company ot Senior Cadets (A Company, 6th Cadet Battalion, Canterbury Regiment). Water for Fire Fighting. The matter of a better supply of water for the borough tor fire fighting purposes has exercised the minds of the Council for a considerable time past. They quite appreciate the fact that a high-pressure scheme is the proper solution, but they also recognise that the proposition would be a most costly one and that at present the ratepayers would not care to accept the burden of increased rating that would be necessarily entailed by a loan for the installation costs. For the present, concrete tanks are to be sunk at various parte of the borough, and into these will run the overflow from the side channels, which will be very considerably supplemented by owners of property in the vicinity permitting the Fire Brigade, in tho event of an outbreak, turning their deep wells into the side channels. On Wednesday a trial was made at the junction of Richmond terrace and ; Brighton terrace, where a tank has • been fixed, the flow from four deep wells rapidly filling the waterways and
so keeping the fire tank well filled, in spite of the efforts of the steamer Extinguisher to pump oat the available supply through a single length of hose, to which wore attached two branches, each giving an excellent voiuiue ot water. Superintendent 11. A. Stokes claims that go far as it went the test was quite a success, the one "fly in the ointment" being tho time lost (lifteen minutes) in turning on the wells, and the water from them, into the tank. Perhaps a much* larger tank would meet the ease, so that a reserve of water might at all times be available at the various points until the supply from the wells came along. It » understood that a new and up-to-date chemical engine will be on hand shortly. The Holiday. To-day, King's Birthday, a close holiday will be observed by the business people, and all premises other than refreshment rooms will be closed. Sports Ground Fund. Members of the New Brighton Cricket and Football Club aro moving in the matter of improving the sports ground. Mr Farlnne, lessee of the Premier Picture Theatre, has given 500 picture tickets on a 50-50 basis. The tickets are available for two months and on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. Mr Fnrlnne's action has been much appreciated, A meeting is to be held to discuss further ways and means of obtaining funds for this very deserving object. There is little doubt that the proposal will meet with the hearty support of the residents. Mr Peter Campbell has been appointed secretary pro tcni. It is understood that the Council will subsidise amounts collected. The Next Gala. The Bright Hours Children are giving an ontertainment on Thursday next in tho Theatre in aid of the Beach Improvement Fund and in ttie interests of the funds of tho gala of 1923. the profits of which will be'der voted to improving tho foreshore.
