ALLEGED ARSON.
AEEEST ON" WELLINGTON WHAEP (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGItAIf.) WELLINGTON, Juno 1. When he stepped off the ferry steamer this morning) a man named John Wa'lkington Smyth was met by Detective-Sergeant Andrews and in' formed that he could consider himself under arrest on a charge of arson, the allegation being that he had set iiro to a building at Kaikoura on May Mil. tomyth was taken to the police station, and a couple of hours later he aj.)j]e.irod before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court. Chief-Detective Kemp; who represented the police, asked tli.it accused should be remanded in custody, to appear at Cliristchurch to-morrow morning. He said that he would oppose bail. Mr T. Ciliary, for accused, applied for bail, as securities could be found. Smyth, he said, had informed him that he knew nothing of the matter. Mr Hunt replied: "Well,'it's at the discretion of the Court. He may know more about it tnan you or I, Olearjy. I Bail is refused. It's only until tomorrow morning, anyway."
