UNIVERSITY DEGREES. (By Cable—Brese Association—Oopyrigit.) (Australian and N\Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, May 1. The Intor-State Universities Conference resolved in favour of a scheme for the uniformity of decrees in the various States. It was also decided to ask the Cambridge University to give greater recognition to Australian degrees where a student desires to do additional work in England, and to ask the London University to recognise t.he Australian matriculation examinations. It was agreed there should be common university examinations in all States in order to encourage competitive games.
SCHOOL CONDEMNED. SYDNEY, June 1. The Waratah. Council has condemned tho Mayfield Public School as unfit for human occupation, and has served 30 days' notice on the Minister of Education to quit. SUSPECTED CASE OP PLAGUE. BRISBANE, June 1. The steamer Southgate, from Calcutta, landed a fireman suspscted to be suffering from plague. After being fumigated, the vessel will sail for Sydney. A NOTABLE APPOINTMENT. (Received June Ist, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 1. For the first time in the history of Australia a woman, Miss Muriel Henderson, has been appointed private secretary at Government House.
