OBITUARY.

DR. ERSON. (By Cable-Press Association.-Copyright (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) MELBOURNE. May 31. The death is announced of Dr. Leg--Erson, formerly of New Zealand, and lately a Legislative Councillor in West ern Australia. MR C. EVANS. The death occurred on Monday at Kaikoura, of Mr Charles Evan at the age of 86. Deceased was born in Gloucestershire, and landed in the Dominion in 1860. He worked as a carpenter in the early days and later became proprietor of the [old] Kaikoura Hotel. Afterwards he was engaged in farming, and was the first to introduce lucerne into the district. His wife predeceased him by five months He is survived by five sons — Messrs John Evans (Christchurch), and Thomas Albert, George. and Arthur Evans (Kaikoura) -and three daughter — Mesdames A. Marsden, J.G. Wight (Petare) and A. C. Reiner (Kaikoura). The dece sed gentleman was highly respected as one of "the old brigade" who had done good service in the district. For some years he had been partially invalided The funeral took place ye terday, when a largo cortege followed the remains to the grave. MR J. H. JARMAN. The new of the death of Mr J. H. (Bert) Jarman cast a gloom over the Darfield district, where he was well known. The deceased, who was 32 years of age, underwent an operation in a private; hospital in Christchurch about a fortnight ago and was understood by his friends to be making satisfactory progress when the news of his death arrived. He was the third son of Mrs and the late Mr T. E. Jarman, of Darfield. After his two brothers, Frank and Nesslea, had been killed at the front, the deceased left with the 33rd Reinforcements, and while on active service with the Mounteds he contracted malaria from which he never completely recoverd. After his return to civilian life he took up farming at his home at "Essendon," Darfield. He was a past president ol the Courtenay A. and P. Association and on the inauguration of the Malvern Returned Soldiers' Association was unanimously elected president. He was a successful breeder of Clydesdale stud horses. He was for two years in succession honorary secretary of the Darfield Horticultural Society. He was vicar's warden at St. Andrew's Church, Darfield, for several years. In 1916 he married Miss Lottie Barker, who is left with three young children. The funeral, which took place at the Greendale cemetery, was one of the largest seen in the district. The Rev. J. R. Hervey officiated at the graveside and in a brief eulogy, referred to the deceased's many sterling qualities. Floral tributes were sent by the following :—Mrs J. H.
