Although rain was falling heavily in Wellington at the timo tho first, trains left for .Xrentham, there had not been a great deal of rain on the course, but sufficient to make the going somewhat on th-j dead side, when racing commenced* Although cold the day was fine and the increased attendance was rewarded with some interesting racing and stirring finishes. The unfortunato happening near the finish in the Gold Cup tenued to mar the- afternoon's sport. It is doubtful if Amytnas wouid have been aeieated in any ease, but the manner in which Kick Oif came again after losing almost two lengths made a deep impression on the spectators. The Judicial Committee immediately met and after a lengthy liearing they found that though interference did take place it could no*ho proved intenlionll and the judge's tracings were not disturbed. The Judicial C'ommitteo also enquired into 'the ease of A. ll*red : a iui\ from iSti'-I Sea, but found that it was an accident, no'blame being attachdlle to anyone The arrangements were well up to the first day's standard in every respect. Proceedings opened with tho Second High Weight Handicap for which Alteration was made a good favourite. Grim Joke gave an altogether different display to that of tho opening day. He was always fairly well placed :.nd when asked for a final effort at the top of the straight he came away and v. on comfortably. Erie, the first day s winner again made a good shoeing, out had no chance with Grim .Joke at 1)10 finish. Alteration, of whom a great deal of use was made, ran well into third phiee. Coalition performed iiciter than da the opening day, and looked much imprcKved. After beiug well hack in the tarly stages he finished close up ljehind tho placed horses. Mamahcra was kept a long way from tho front in the early part of the race, but was running on at the finish. "VVamba, usual, was many lengths 111 front for seven furlongs, but after that soon came back to his field. Bine Hall and Active were fifth and sixth respectively, but Sir Rosebery and Dairasdalo were always in the rear. "
The Hutt Handicap saw a useful field of twelve go to the post. Mustard Pot and S. Walla 6eemed a happy combination in the preliminary, while Sunny Corner (A. Oliver;, Blackmail and Bonnie Heather also went down «ell. Mustard Pot was in a good position all the way, and although he mado an effort in the straight, he could not go on with his lighter-weighted opponents. Scion, the winner, was offered .at Mr Riddiford's sale on Friday for 500 guineas, with his engagement given in, but failed to find a purchaser. He was on the inside of the middle division for the major part of the race, and getting a lucky rim on the rails ir. tlv; straight he scored decisively. Blackmail was always in a good position, and finished on hetter than usual, but Sunny Corner, her stable mate, was being bard ridden two furlongs from home. Truthful, who drew the inside position at the barrier, was pinched out at the start, and was never afterwards prominent. Bonnie HeatheT was great guns at the finish and looked like running on, and ean he marked down as an i«arly winner. Princess Pat had a good position with Capping Day in the lead ever the first six furlongs, but both faded out at the finish. Prince Hal rnd Bodyguard we're close up behind Mustard Pot at the judge's box, and both should win shortly in a little less select company
Tho field left in a good line foT tho Muritai Handicap, Liqueur, Basso, and Te Kuri being the first to., show out. Liqueur led the field for seven furlongs, but could not withstand a challenge by Dissertation, and finished a fair fourth. Angelo, the winner, had none of tho good luck of the running, as ho drew an outside position at the barrier and was always two or more horses out. Ho was ridden right out with the whip m the Straight, and only reached Dissertation in the last stride. Dissertation is a nicely-turned three-year-old filly by Demosthenes- from Suratura, and although Bhe had a much smoother passage than Angelo, she is more than useful, and should win shortly. Redlogue, Basso, and Te Kuri performed the best of the remainder.
Tfad field for the Autumn Handicap represented very fair class, and all went down well, Halifax being the only one that, on appearance, hardly justified his placo m the- field. Gasbag, _ the winner, w»3 one of the middle division in the early part of the race, and was still tucked in behind the leaders when the straight was reached. R. Reed pushed him through on the rails fifty yards from the post, and, once clear, lie went on to win by a neck. Quest, the second horse, improved on hie showing on the opening day, for he led practically all the way, and iust suffered defeat. Insurrection followed Gasbag through on the rails, and finished very fast in third place. He was on the rail® practically all the way, but the field closed in on him several times during the race, and with a clear run in the straight h© would have been hard to beat. Marqueteur, once into the straight, camo in the centre of tiiie course aaA showed a great deal of speed to the finish, and was a very creditable fourth. Sjycorax was always well placed behind Quest, but went back to fifth place aftba finish. Aureate and Bitters both went fair races, and Vagabond made a good run between the six and four ftirlbng posts, but was not afterwards prominent. Kilgour tailed off early, antl ran in the rear the whole way. ,
The Pacific Handicap brought out a field of eleven good-looking two-year-olds Rapine, the winner on the opening d»y> looked nil the better for his outing, and nothing else went down better than Will Oakland's sister Fuielli. Arcs was troublesome at the barrier, and although the field apparently left in- good lino, Rapine dropped bacK suddenly soon after the stariT, and whip-
ped in tho field for the remainder of the journey. Zany led on to tho course proper, and stayed on better than on the opening day, being a very fair third. Kinofs"Trumpeter was always on© of the leading division, and lie won very comfortably, his display being in marked contrast to that of the opening day. Gold Lijrht again ran a sterling race with not the best of luck, and was finishing much faster than the winner. Finelli showed speed for five furlongs, but Moorland was not noticeable at any stage. Mountain Lion gave a credit ihb showing with his big weight, but Killashanda weakened over the last furlong. The four contestants for the Trer.tham Gold Cup were eagerly scanned and little fault could be found with their condition. Aznythas moved freely enough, while "Winning Hit went down in his preliminary in a manner reminiscent 0 f the last New Zealand Cup meeting. Kick OfJLlooked a picture and Trespass did not by any means disgrace his opponents. Amythas ran in third place for the great part of the journey. He appeared to falter slightly half a. mile from home, but onec into tho straight he put in some t«llin£ strides which took him to the front at the half distance. He unfortunately hung in and interfered with Kick Off who had to be steadied into third place. Amythas then went on to'win ,l>v two lengths. Kick Off ran behind Thinning Hit until entering the straight and he had headed "Winning Hit otter the distance post. _ His_ effort m coming again after the interference to defeat Winning Hit for second place was especially creditable. To Sir George Clifford's colt must be given the credit of the fast time recorded, and four furlongs from home he made an effort to leave his field but could not sustain it. Trespass ran wp to the others at the top of the straight, but was quite outclassed at the finish.
Mireusonta, the winner of the Suburban Handicap and the only double winner at the meeting, was the first to show out, and he maintained his advantage to win very comfortably in fast time. Rational started from the extreme outside and he came through halfway down "the straight l>ut could not reach I'he winner. Anomaly was just behind Mireusonta on reaching the course proper, but he again weakened in the run home and was not a good fourth. Absurdum, the favourite, had every chance to score as he drew the inside running and early was amongst the leading division, but disappeared at the entrance to the straight. Still Sea stumbled and lost his rider, A. Heed, in the straight, but neither was hurt. Triboulet is an improving gelding and he was a very creditable third. Silver Peak and J?rmtemps were always in the ruck.
Thirteen fair performers were left to contest the Belmont Handicap. Moutoa's Gift, the winner, is a three year old brown filly by Absurd from Princess Mout o a. She commenced smartly and running to the front below the distance, won very comfortably. Danger, Zone was prominent in the early stages, but he went back into the ruck before reaching the coursd proper, while Petunia, after showing out over the first two furlongs, was well back in the concluding stages. Landbird ran a useful race into third place and was finishing on fairly well, while Merry Day came again with a good finishing run, but her best was again second. After his double win at Wellington .Mireusonta with 7st 31b (including his 101b penalty) in the Canterbury. Jockey Club's Great Easter Handicap appears to have a chance second to none. Tho manner in which he tignaily defeated such good sprinters as national, Anomaly and Absuidum on the concluding day at Trentham stamps him as a very speedy gelding, and what is more he was running on at the finish in a manner that suggested chat seven furlongs would be quito within his compass. A three-year-old gelding by Absurd from Rosie Desmond he is bred in the purple, both his parents bfing imported from England, liis dame Rosio Dennond being by Farasi from Joily Rose; by Enthusiast from Epsom Rose, Acceptances for tho llororata Pacing Club's, annual meeting close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Canterbury Jockey Club's rooms. C. Emerson's horsemanship wa3 the principal factor in Lord Leslie's win in the Trial Plate at Amberley. Dame Fortune had n good lead when tho straight was reached, but her apprentice rider instead of making full use of his advantage, kept. looking round, and Emerson with a final drive got Lord Leslie homo'a winner by inches Gamecock, for whom a 71b apprentice's allowance wa3 claimed, was made a solid favourite for the Amberley Cup. He began well, and going pust the stand the first time was in the lead alongside Tyne, who was on the rails. Had ho been allowed to run to tho front then, he would probably never have been headed, but lie is a moody customer, and after being steadied in behind Tyne and High Heals, he gradually dropped back. High Heels meanwhjje had run to the front and won handsomely. Her apprentice rider A. A. Youngman, has not had many opportunities in races, but ho shows considerable promise.
The Hack Handicap at Amberley ended most unfortunately, for after the favourito, Madam Chiron, had won under 9st 51b in a most convincing manner, hor rider, D. Cotton could not draw the weipht on returning to scales, and tho mare was necessarily disqualified, first place going to Hillock, and second to Horatrua. How Cotton could not draw the Ost slb is still unexplained. He came to scales after winning with tho same number of rubbers, same lead bag and saddle, yet could only lift Ust 2Jlb. The backers of Madam Chiron wore naturally aggrieved, and so were a number of the supporters of Horatius, who • had destroyed their totalisator tickets before they knew that he had been awarded second place. The race was by no means a lubky ono for D. Cotton, the rider of Madam Chiron, as
he was fined £2 for disoba-iierce at th 3 start. Pyinma, who won the Wattle Handicap," was bred in tho Aniberley district, and has a wonderfully good lecord On the local course, for he has only once been beaten there. He is now_ nine years old, and ha 3 raced regularly at Amberlev since he won his maiden race there as"n three-year-oid. C. McGiegor, his rider on Saturday, was fined £2 by the starter. IS COUNTRY TOO STIFF? (By Cable—Press Association —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received April 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 1. Tho yearly outburst of indignation following the Grand National in consequence of fatal accidents duo to tho ugly obstacles in the race "is becoming more intense. Two horses were killed in th& recent Grand National and the newspapers have Eince been inundated with correspondence, some of tho writers asserting 1 that Spanish bull fighting is less cruel than the National, in which thoroughbred horses are deud and dying while other competitors are jumping over their bodies. Public indignation is so hot that Whitaker, a well-known owner, trainer, and rider, whose mount, Area-vale, fell when lie hod u. winning chance, wioto to the authorities suggesting alterations in the conditions of-the race providing that only firßt class jumpers should bo cllowed to compete and tho remainder grouped in a. junior National, thus ensuring reasonably sized fields. Mr E. Shortt, K.C., Secretary of State for Home Affairs, replying to questions in tho House of Commons, said he had not tho power to prohibit the Grand National. If a horso was entered for a raco for which it was not fitted it was a breach of the Protection to Animals Act. He had no euch evidonca that euch was the case. SETS BY CHEQUE.
