OBITUARY.
THE EX-EMPEROR KARL. (By Cable—„?re« Aaiociation—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received April 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) FUNCHAL, April 1. The death is announced of the exI'Jmperor Karl, of Austria. [The ex-Emperor Karl was born on August 17th, 1887, and married Princess Zita of Bourbon and Parma on October 21st, 1911. They had six children, fxe succeeded his late uncle, th<s Emperor Franz Josef, but had to abdicate the throne when Austria was proclaimed a. Republic in 1918. He retired to Switzerland, where lie lived t'll Inst year, when, as a result of his unsuccessful effort to tccu-pture the throne, the Allies exiled him to Madiera.]
Mr Thomas 1/eedliam, who died at D'unedin on Friday, was for many year-; a member of the' Fanciers' Club. He alto took an active interest in hunting, and more t!i:m once filled a vacancy l»y judging lit trotting meetings. The death has occurred at Rotoruu of Mr "SV. H. Smith, of Te Xgae, a wellknown sheepfamier and grazier. he leaves a widow and family. One son d'eJ recently from war injuries. At one time deceased was secretary of the 'Hawke's Bay Pastoral Association. He was a line judge of stock.
