Joltings for Farmers. There are still 35,000 bales, of Im-perially-owned wool in store in Waaganui. ! An unusual case v.as called at the Gore Magistrate's Court on Thursday, when :i farmer with 10C0 acres of freehold land was sued for on a judgment summons. Tho debtor said the Government, valuation of Iris land came to £3OOO, and he had a mortgage of £4OOO on his farm and stock. Tho proceeds from the sale of his fat stock went to tho- mortgagees. He had 40 acres of wheat and about oO acres in cats, all of which wore still in the paddock. He simply had no money just now with which'to pay anything, but would be pleased to do so as soon as ho ! was able. Tho Magistrate said that under the circumstances he would inako no order. GLENBOT. Mr O. C. Morrison, who has been relieving 'here for the past two montns, has been transferred to Ar-bburton, and Mi- AY. R. MePherson, of AVaimate, has been appointed by the Education Board as per man on t teacher. A very enjoyable danco was held in the school on Tuesday evening. Miss Busch supplied the music gratuitously, extras being played by Mrs I. Thome and Misses' Bess:© Powell and Rata Orsbourn. The prccoeds will help io swell the tennis fund. At tho annual meeting of the Collie Club it was decided to ask the ladies of the district to organise a luncheon booth at the forthcoming dog triaie, the proceeds to be given to the churches, r.s was done last year. A meeting took p'.acs on. Thursday afternoon to consider the offer, and after a lively discussion .it was decided that as funds are urgently needed for tho tennis court and hall, the ladies would undertake to provide luncheon on condition that tho proceeds ba devoted to these objects, and Mrs A. S. Thwaite.s was asked to write to the Collie Club to that effect. Subscribers will notice with satisfaction that tho work of bringing the telegraph lino up the Downs road is proceeding rapidly, and before 'long tuey will huvo the convenience of the telephone, thanks to tho enterprise of Mr C. Morland The weather h:i.s been very change-able lately, and rain has fallen almost every night for the past week, delaying tho cutting of tho clover crops. EAKAIA. The annual meeting of tho Rakaia Library was presided over by Mr C. Shannon, and there was a small attendance of subscribers. The balance-sheet showed ft credit balance of £lO 2s Sd. There were 32 subscribers, and 3117 hooka had been circulated during the year. Two hundred new books had been bought. It was decided to vote an honorarium of £lO to the secretory. The following committee was elected : Messrs C. Shannon, J. England, R. Mcodie, C. Evison, and P. Hunt. Mra R. Breach, was appointed secretary and librarian.
Mr A. B. "Wilmott, letter-carrier, of Rakaia.. is under orders to transfer to Cbristchurch. Mr H. Steere, chief clerk at the railway station, is absent an extended leave. His place is Sbing taken by Mr ttrigg. ASHBURTON. The vital statistics for the Asliburton registration district for the month of March are:—Births 41, deaths 10, marriages 7. The figures for March, l.'iMl, were: Births 22, deaths 12, marriages At the third annual meeting of St. Stephen's Girls' Club, the vicar, tho Rev. J. F. Wiseman, presided over a largo attendance of members. The annual report and the'balance-sheet were adopted. The review of the yoar's work showed that tho club had been able to continue its support of'the C.M.S. sdhool at Ambasanradrnni, South India, and had forwarded £25 for this purpose. Eleven pounds had been sent to the Melanesia)! Mission, £3 to the Maori Mission, and £<2 to St. Saviour's Oi Jphanage at Shirley. A parcel of clothing had been sent to St. Saviour's Orphanage, and a number of dresses for native students at Sarah Tucker Col.liege, PalsiTncottah, India, had l>eon made. The balance-sheet elhowed a credit of £9, and it was decided to dovote £4 10s to the Save the Children, Fund, and £4 10s to the cost of the much-needed addition to tho club's school at Ambasamudrum. (Later, a generous donation towards the latter cause made it possible for tho dub to contribute the whole cost of the n«w room.) Mrs E. Ruddock was elected president, Miss H. Lockwood secretary and treasurer, and Miss M. Maister assistant secretary. Interesting letters were read from the headmaster of the Mission School and from Miss Pawson, of Sarah Tucker College. Supper provided by the committee, brought an interesting and enjoyable meeting to a close.,
