TROUBLE IN MORETON BAY.^
HASTES AND SEAMAN. (By Cable—Pre«» Association—Copyright.) (Auatralian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received April 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 81. Captain, Avern, master of the Moieton Bay, was charged at Bow street with assaulting l Burns, a member oi the replaced British crew. Burns alleged that Avern called him to his cabin and accused him of causing trouble. He then assaulted him. Buxna said he.was later imprisoned, but escaped. He alleged that Avern, armed with a revolver, and accompanied by hia officers, violently re-arrested him, bound him with ropes, and confined, him in a hole under the isolation hospital. Avern stated that the passsengers complained of the- British crew's conduct. Burns adopted a threatening' attitude, and he struck Burns because the latter threatened, to strike him. Burns had to be roped when rearrested because he kicked and bit. Ho acted throughout in tie interests of the passengers and the maintenance of discipline. The Magistrate said the whole question was whether overmuch violence was us. .1 in re-arresting, Burns. There were some reasons for regarding the latter as dangeroua. The case was dismissed. She is of 30 tons register, is 55ft long-, 14ft in beam, and has a draught of 6ft. She is fitted- with engines manufactured by Messrs Gardner and Sous, of Manchester, and on' her trials registered &J knots per hour. Tho two fish holds situated for'ard and aft are capable of holding ten tons of fish, and there is also a roomy cabin fitted with bunks, the masts are of a particularly serviceable type, and can be stepped or lowered at will. FAST BAILEES. , Regarding- the quick passages of sailing l vessels recently between Australia, and New Zealand, an Auckland shipping agent states that these do not compare tavourably with tho performances of sailing vessels under similar conditions during tho latter half of the nineteenth century. The record, hj« claims, is held by the barque Alice Cameron, of 401 tons, which, in 1857, mads the voyage from Sydney to Auckland in 5 days 4 hours. On that occasion she returned- to Sydney 21 days after clearing there- for Auckland, having epent four days in, port and ten days on the return voyage. She belonged l to the same line as the Novelty, the Constance, and the Kate, and these barques frequently did the voyage in Beven days. Another performance of the Alioe Cameron w«3 a voyage from San Francisco to Auckland in 81 days. She arrived in port f on the morning of March Bth, 1867, with San Francisco newspapers dated February 2nd; and this she did in spite of a delay of two days while becalmed in tho tropics. This fame passage was maio in 1818 by a British barque named Novelty in'ihe short timo of 29 days.
