PEERESSES IN PARLIAMENT.
LADY RHONDDA'S CLAIM. (Br Cable—Pr«aa Association—Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Ansociatioa.) (Received March 31st, 8.00 p.m.) LONDON, March 30. In the House of Lords Lord Donouglimoro moved a' motion that the House agree with the report of the Committee on Privileges regarding the eligibility of tho Viscountess Rhondda to sit m the House of Peers. Lord Birkenhead moved an amendment to remit the case to the committee in order that certain points might be rediscussed. He said it was a question whether the Act of Parliament by proper legal interpretation had made it necessary for their Lordships to say that Peeresses must be admitted to the House. The amendment was agreed to without a division.
[The Committee oil Privileges granted Lady Rhondda's petition, claiming the right to sit. in the House of Lords. The decision established the right of 24 peeresses to sit in the House of Lords. Lady Rhondda's claim was based on the contention that the Sex Disqualification Removal Act was intended to abolish all sex disqualifies tions which prevented tho exercise by women of public functions. The Crown did not oppose the claim. A later message said:—The "Daily Express" understands that when the report of the Committee on Privileges in favour of peeresses sitting in the House of Lords is discussed, the report will be rejected. A large majority are said to be opposed to women sitting in the House of Lords, and, for this reason, it is felt that the innovation should be held qver until the reform of the Upper Chamber has been disposed of.]
